Is Trump's Rhetoric Undermining His Chances of Victory?

I really want Donald Trump to win in November. I'm terrified of what might happen to our country if he loses. I would hardly be the first person to observe that Trump's greatest opponent is himself because, in every sense, that is true. While we can appreciate his authenticity compared to the average politician who panders to different groups—I’m looking at you, Kamala—his lack of discipline can be a major liability.

What has me concerned this time? It's a post he made on Truth Social on Saturday night.

"CEASE & DESIST: I, together with many Attorneys and Legal Scholars, am watching the Sanctity of the 2024 Presidential Election very closely because I know, better than most, the rampant Cheating and Skullduggery that has taken place by the Democrats in the 2020 Presidential Election," he wrote."It was a Disgrace to our Nation! Therefore, the 2024 Election, where Votes have just started being cast, will be under the closest professional scrutiny and, WHEN I WIN, those people that CHEATED will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long term prison sentences so that this Depravity of Justice does not happen again."

We cannot let our Country further devolve into a Third World Nation, AND WE WON’T! Please beware that this legal exposure extends to Lawyers, Political Operatives, Donors, Illegal Voters, & Corrupt Election Officials. Those involved in unscrupulous behavior will be sought out, caught, and prosecuted at levels, unfortunately, never seen before in our Country.

Should we be vigilant about stopping election fraud? Yes. Should those who commit election fraud be prosecuted? Yes. Is rhetoric like this helpful? No, it is not.

While there may still be valid questions surrounding the 2020 election, this kind of rhetoric sends the wrong message.

“I have never seen a candidate more determined to blow an election,” pollster Frank Luntz said in a post on X/Twitter. “Instead of talking about affordability and immigration security (the top public issues), Trump is once again screaming about prosecuting his opponents.”

I completely agree that Trump’s rhetoric isn’t helping his campaign—in fact, it’s likely hurting him. By constantly revisiting the 2020 election, he’s giving the media endless opportunities to rehash old controversies, including January 6, making Kamala Harris very happy because it alienates the independents who will ultimately decide this election and gives her ammunition to say that Trump plans to prosecute his political enemies.

If Trump wants to reclaim the White House, he should be making this election a referendum on the Biden-Harris administration -- and nothing more. Instead, he seems more interested in airing personal grievances about 2020, which feels disconnected from the issues that matter to voters today.

For sure, election integrity is an important issue that I want Trump and the GOP to address next year. I just wish Trump would stop making it about himself and simply say that election integrity is about making sure that both sides have confidence in the results of our elections regardless of the outcome.

And believe me, Democrats don't have a moral high ground when it comes to accepting election results. Democrats haven’t accepted the results of any presidential election they’ve lost since 1988. They challenged the outcomes in 2000, 2004, and 2016—and they’ll undoubtedly contest the next election they lose.

The problem is that the media doesn’t call them out for it. It may not be fair, but that’s the reality.

The good news is that commonsense reforms like voter ID laws and counting all votes, including mail-in ballots, on Election Day are popular ideas. Restoring faith in our electoral process will require reforms supported by bipartisan majorities, and that’s where his attention should be on election integrity—not creating the impression of a personal vendetta about 2020.
