Blackmailing Biden Was a Power Grab Echoing the Torricelli Switch

After successfully blackmailing President Joe Biden to exit the 2024 presidential race, the Democratic Party once again has proven itself to be so corrupt that no power grab is beneath it. And while Trump is still the favorite to win the election, we shouldn’t forget that Democrats have swapped out candidates before and won.

I was freshly into politics when Democrats faced a certain defeat in a Senate election, so they illegally switched their candidate just over a month before Election Day.

In 2002, amid mounting corruption scandals and sinking poll numbers, Sen. Robert Torricelli (D-N.J.) dropped his reelection bid a mere 36 days before the election. New Jersey election law dictated that a statewide candidate could not be replaced within 51 days of an election. Democrats should have been stuck with Torricelli. Instead, Democrats ran retired senator Frank Lautenberg in his place.

The abrupt swap was a transparent attempt to salvage a faltering campaign and retain a critical seat, thwarting the will of the voters. Though blatantly a violation of the law, the Democrat-controlled New Jersey Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Lautenberg could replace Torricelli on the ballot.

“It is in the public interest and the general intent of the election laws to preserve the two-party system and to submit to the electorate a ballot bearing the names of candidates of both major political parties as well as of all other qualifying parties,” the court ruled.

As someone who was just getting interested in politics at the time, it was an early introduction to the corruption of the Democratic Party. Laws are irrelevant when they stand in the way of the Democrats holding onto power. The entire situation could have easily disenchanted me with the entire process and discouraged me from remaining politically active.

Biden’s withdrawal, coupled with Kamala Harris' emergence as the presumptive nominee, mirrors the Torricelli switch of 2002, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the nomination process. Democrats saw that Biden was headed for certain defeat and spent weeks after his disastrous debate performance, pressuring him to drop out and succeeding with the ultimate humiliation: blackmailing him with a threat to invoke the 25th Amendment if he didn’t drop out.

What Democrats have done to Biden may not be illegal in the same way that replacing Torricelli with Lautenberg was, but it shows that Democrats believe that they are entitled to power, that the laws don’t apply to them, and that they couldn't care less about "democracy."

The Democrat Party’s relentless manipulation of the nomination process — prioritizing their grip on power over a fair and transparent selection — betrays the democratic principles they purport to champion. Their opportunistic tactics, evident in their 2002 maneuver to preserve a Senate seat, proved that they could manipulate elections even when they broke the law.

In 2024, their strategy to salvage their presidential chances through similar subterfuge poses an even graver threat. They prevailed in 2002 with Lautenberg, and now we face the grim prospect of their schemes securing another victory, whether with Harris or an alternate candidate. Are we going to sit idly by and let their deceitful tactics deliver yet another corruptly obtained victory?
