Princess Costumes Bumped From #1 Spot This Halloween After 11-Year Reign

The countdown has begun, and everyone is starting to feel the excitement in the air as Halloween approaches. While some just put out a pumpkin or keep their porch light on for trick-or-treaters, others go all out. With extensive decorative skeletons, spider webs, and witches adorning their front lawns, adults join kids in the fun of the holiday.

But if you really want to embrace Halloween, you’ll be dressing up with the best of them. The amount of money projected to be spent on Halloween costumes in 2016 is a whopping $3.1 billion. And as many as 67% of people who plan to celebrate the spooky day will dress up. But unlike previous years, the top kids’ costume is no longer the princess.

A recent survey by the National Retail Federation looked at what costumes are bound to be popular this year and found that for the first time in over a decade, more kids will dress as their favorite hero than princess. I guess in these tough times, we need to take action rather than wait around for Prince Charming to save the day! Here’s the breakdown of what the survey found for kids under the age of 18:

Children’s Costumes

  1. Action/Superhero
  2. Princess
  3. Animal (Cat, Dog, Lion, Monkey, etc.)
  4. Batman Character
  5. Star Wars Character
  6. Tie: Witch AND DC Superhero (excl. Batman)
  7. Frozen Character (Anna, Elsa, Olaf)
  8. Marvel Superhero (excl. Spiderman)
  9. Zombie
  10. Spiderman
