It’s possible that by now, your New Year’s resolutions have gone the way of the dodo bird. But since summer is rapidly approaching, it might be a good time to rethink those goals you had while you could wear a few layers of clothes and hide the proof that you overindulged in a few too many holiday festivities.
The American College of Sports Medicine has recently highlighted the top 10 fitness trends of 2016. Some of them aren’t exactly new (yoga), or groundbreaking (running for weight loss), but all offer options for anyone looking to start moving again. Have you jumped on the bandwagon? If jumping is too much, maybe you can slowly walk to the bandwagon. It’s a start!
- Wearable Technology – Fitbit, Garmin, and Apple Watch (among others) offer people the option to keep track of everything from steps taken to calories eaten.
- Body Weight Training – Think push-ups, pull-ups, etc. In other words, using your own body weight to train.
- High-Intensity Interval Training – Combining exercises like running, push-ups, squats for 30 minutes – this has proven to be more effective than running alone.
- Strength Training -Using weight resistance like free weights or machines at the gym.
- Fitness Professionals -Not just personal trainers, but nutritionists and health consultants to help you get on track.
- Personal Training -These professionals can customize workouts and also offer suggestions for lifestyle changes.
- Functional Fitness -Helping individuals (often elderly people, but not necessarily) improve mobility and strength.
- Fitness Programs for Older Adults – Using lighter weights and aerobic activity to improve quality of life.
- Exercise and Weight Loss – Daily exercise, like running or strength-training, with the goal of losing weight.
- Yoga – Postures and poses that can improve mobility, strength, flexibility and blood flow, among other things.
