Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) says that the FBI’s number two official gave inadequate answers when he testified before the House Intelligence Committee earlier this week.
Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe testified for seven hours before the committee on Tuesday, and his answers conflicting and unsatisfactory, according to congressional sources.
“I don’t believe adequate answers were given — I’ll just leave it at that,” King, a member of the committee, told Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum Wednesday evening. “There were so many unanswered questions,” he added.
According to King, House investigators didn’t come any closer to discovering what role the anti-Trump dossier played in the FBI’s investigation of the Trump campaign.
“We sort of take for granted that this was an investigation against a presidential campaign,” he said. “This is almost unprecedented!” he exclaimed. He noted that Congress was originally told that members of the Trump team were having unprecedented contacts with Russia.
“Well it turns out, there was virtually none — none of any substance” King argued. He said that the concerns over Carter Page — a minor Trump player during the campaign — were overblown. “Carter Page’s trip to Moscow — there was absolutely nothing there. That’s clear, we know that now,” King continued.
The congressman was unable to confirm whether Andrew McCabe was the “Andy” mentioned in the infamous smoking gun text message between demoted FBI agent Peter Strzok and his mistress Lisa Page in which Strzok referred to an “insurance policy” against the president.
“I was not there when he confirmed it. I think he did — I’m not certain about it,” King said. “All I know is he did not adequately answer any of those types of questions.”
King explained that it’s important to have closed hearings because they’re conducting an ongoing investigation, saying, “We don’t necessarily want other witnesses to know everything that’s been said in there so they can’t tailor their stories to it.”
And the congressman reiterated how unimpressed he was with the “evidence” he’s seen thus far of Russia collusion.
“So far we’ve seen nothing,” said King.
MacCallum asked if McCabe said anything in his closed door testimony that contradicted what he has said in public hearings before congress.
King paused for a moment, then said, “I really can’t say, Martha.”
