A family of seven had to flee to the roof of their house in Overland Park, Kansas, Tuesday morning, as the Blue River rose and the rushing water surrounded them.
Three rounds of torrential rain pounded Kansas City Monday into early Tuesday, triggering the second major flash flood in in the Kansas City metropolitan area in less than a month.
Overland Park Fire Dept. spokesperson Jason Rhodes said the family is trapped on the roof and that crews are in contact with them by phone.

There are four children, three adults and their pets.
“They are safe and calm,” Rhodes said. “Because they are not in eminent danger and the water levels around them are receding, crews will allow those water levels to drop to safer levels before evacuating the family.”

According to the National Weather Service, “the Blue River was expected to crest at its second highest level early Tuesday, topped only by a September 1961 flood.”
Numerous water rescues were required overnight in the metro area, including in Overland Park and Riverside. A stretch of Interstate 35 southbound near downtown Kansas City was reported to have 2 to 3 feet of water covering the road Monday night.
Parts of the Kansas City metro area picked up over 9 inches of rain, as three rounds of heavy rain pounded the area Monday morning, then Monday afternoon, then again Monday night into early Tuesday morning.
