When state and local authorities refuse to honor detainer requests from federal immigration authorities, it not only ensures that criminals escape justice; it also puts the entire community at risk of further crimes.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) posted about Miguel Reyes-Castro and Olvin Antonio Ramos-Ramos, two illegal aliens who murdered a 14-year-old boy in Virginia over the weekend. ICE has placed immigration detainer requests for the killers, but if this county is anything like nearby Fairfax County, those requests will not be honored.
Local law enforcement in Chatham County, GA, arrested two criminal illegal aliens in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed a 14-year-old boy Sunday night.

“When an immigration detainer is honored, ICE officers arrest the target alien in the secure location — such as a local jail,” the federal agency wrote on X. “This is safer than having to arrest the criminal illegal alien at-large in the community after their release.”
Of course, if previous presidents — especially Joe Biden — had not opened the borders for so many illegal aliens, even granting amnesty to countless foreign lawbreakers, likely those killers would never have been in Virginia to commit a fatal hit-and-run to begin with. But besides that, authorities have the obligation to honor federal immigration detainers. It is deliberately fueling crime not to do so.
I mentioned Fairfax County because authorities there provided one of the worst examples recently of a refusal to honor an immigration detainer that ended up costing an American’s life. El Salvadoran illegal alien and serial criminal Marvin Fernando Morales-Ortez ought to have been handed over into ICE custody. Instead, woke local authorities including Fairfax County Commonwealth Attorney Steve Descano chose to release and re-release Morales-Ortez onto the streets. Descano even dropped murder charges against Morales-Ortez.

Last month, Fairfax authorities who would not cooperate with ICE released Morales-Ortez yet again, and hours later, the illegal alien murdered a man in Reston. If only Fairfax County had honored the September detainer from ICE, the Reston man would be alive today. But Fairfax County preferred to thumb its nose at ICE.
Morales-Ortez is not the only example. In April, ICE finally caught up with a Guatemalan illegal alien who raped a child in 2024. In March of that year, ICE lodged an immigration detainer request with Fairfax County, which the county did not honor. In May, a court found Ander Cortez-Mendez guilty of “consensual” sexual intercourse with a child. The Biden administration had previously released Cortez-Mendez into the country, and the Fairfax County Circuit Court suspended his entire prison sentence for the pedophilia. The Guatemalan was therefore free in 2025 when ICE arrested him in Virginia.
In Washington state, meanwhile, authorities recently released Indian illegal alien Kamalpreet Singh on bail, even though ICE lodged a detainer request because Singh caused a deadly crash that ended young Robert Pearson's life.
Examples could be multiplied, but as we begin this midterm year, we need to drive home the point to all Americans voters that woke Democrat authorities are deliberately endangering Americans by defying ICE detainers.
