Do Not Forget Persecuted Christians This Christmas

This Christmas, as you decorate your tree, bake cookies, attend church, and gather with family, don’t forget to pray for those Christians who are in prison, in hiding, or fearful of ever-looming terror attacks.

In Syria and Nigeria, Christians are being wiped out in genocides. In Iran, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and China, persecution has intensified. In Turkey, Iraq, Sudan, Vietnam, Thailand, Venezuela, Bangladesh, India, North Korea, Cuba, Gaza, Lebanon, Indonesia, and Rwanda — among countries and territories — Christians face constant harassment, censorship, displacement, imprisonment, torture, and even death for their faith. This Christmas season, millions of Christians cannot celebrate in peace and security.

The two evil ideologies most responsible for persecution of Christians in the world today are Islam and Communism. Unfortunately, many Westerners — even some conservatives — are so fixated on decrying Israel (the only Middle Eastern nation with equal rights for all religions) that they ignore the massacres in Islamic countries like Syria.

International Christian Concern (ICC) regularly highlights stories of persecution from around the world. One of the crises to which it is trying to call  attention is that of imprisonment for years on end, particularly a problem in Muslim countries:

Around the world, Christians are forced to spend years of their lives, many times a decade or more, behind bars for the “crime” of believing in Jesus Christ.

Believers in nations like China, Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan, to name a few, must endure torturous imprisonment, separation from the outside world, and inhumane treatment for practicing Christianity… For Islamist-led countries, power holders wish to stop the spread of Christianity, with physical force if need be.

Sometimes violence against Christians is triggered by material crises. In Kenya, Christian farmers are suffering attacks from Muslim Somali herders. While drought triggered this latest conflict, ICC says the religious component makes the violence worse.

In June, ICC mourned, “Many Christians across Africa and Latin America continue to suffer for their faith because of Islamic oppression, dictatorial paranoia, and criminal cartel organizations.” It specifically cited Cuba, the DRC, Mexico, Mozambique, Nicaragua, and Nigeria.

The heartbreaking stories from across the globe are endless. In El Fasher, Sudan, up to 150,000 residents have quite literally vanished from the city since Islamic Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took over, including Christians. In November, jihadi Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) murdered 20 Catholic hospital patients in the DRC, including new mothers.

The Nigerian genocide that has cost over 60,000 lives rages on, fueled by Islamic jihad. There, violence occurs every week, sometimes almost every day.

Islamic jihad and government persecution are becoming more prevalent in the West, too. The violence and suffering we overlook abroad is closer to home than we think. As we honor the Babe born to die this Christmas, may we also remember His suffering children.
