Bill of Rights Ratification Anniversary: Our Rights Are Under Assault

On this day 234 years ago, the Bill of Rights was officially ratified. More than two centuries later, the rights guaranteed in those first 10 amendments to the Constitution are under constant assault.

Free speech, freedom of religion, the right to keep and bear arms, freedom of the press, the right to due process, defense against cruel and unusual punishment, property rights, and rights reserved to states — they have all come under assault in the last six years, primarily from Democrats, but occasionally even from Republicans.

During the Covid-19 lockdowns, there was scarcely a right upon which the government did not trample, from freedom of assembly to freedom of religion (church and synagogue closures) to free speech (with the launch of the censorship industrial complex). The damage from lost jobs, lost scholarships, lost opportunities, and, most importantly, lost lives due to horrible medical policies and treatments is incalculable. And partly that was because both state and federal governments decided to ignore the Constitution completely.

And of course, the Biden administration was not willing to give it all up once they finally had to end the Covid lockdowns. Under Joe Biden, his autopen, and his cackling cretin of a VP, the federal government waged a war on the Second Amendment, including by confiscating gun dealers’ licenses and adding onerous background check proposals. The Biden administration also tried to force religious institutions to violate their consciences on transgenderism, homosexuality, and abortion. And of course, the Biden administration has become synonymous with online censorship.

The Fifth Amendment states that no one can “be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” The Jan. 6 protestors and the pro-lifers imprisoned by the Biden administration, sometimes for years at a time without trial, would have loved to see that amendment respected. A federal judge and a congressional investigation also uncovered such abuse of Jan. 6ers as possibly violated the Eighth Amendment prohibition against “cruel and unusual punishments.” The Sixth Amendment right to a speedy trial was another right undermined by the weaponization of justice. The Mar-a-Lago raid possibly violated the search and seizure restrictions of the Fourth Amendment.

Even now Democrats continue to campaign against free speech, freedom of conscience, private property, gun rights, and more. The Bill of Rights is in grave danger. Then there are other factors, such as the continued and persistent woke bias of technology companies and the artificial intelligence products they design and program.

We cannot simply rely on our elected representatives to protect our rights, because power corrupts. Also, our federal government as it exists now has so many unconstitutional agencies and activities that any official must continually fight the deep state to protect our rights. Ultimately, we have to be ready to defend our own rights. The Founding Fathers intended it that way.

George Mason, father of the Bill of Rights, wrote, “No free government, or the blessings of liberty, can be preserved to any people, but by a firm adherence to justice, moderation, temperance, frugality and virtue.” No one else cares so much about your rights as you do. That is why you must be their primary safeguard, at the ballot box and in the public square.
