After the tragic mass shooting at Brown University that killed two students yesterday, police have finally detained a “person of interest.”
The Wall Street Journal reported the arrest of the potential suspect, but did not reveal many details other than the fact that the person seems to be in his 30s. Providence Chief of Police Oscar Perez simply confirmed the arrest of the individual while speaking to the press.
WCVB ABC5 Boston reported that the person of interest had multiple firearms in his possession at the time of the arrest and was not a Brown University student. As of Sunday morning, one individual shot on Saturday was still in critical condition but stabilized, while seven more were in stable condition. One victim had already been discharged from the hospital.
Local police and the FBI engaged in a joint operation to arrest the person of interest at a Hampton Inn in Coventry, Rhode Island, according to WCVB.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley issued a statement: “I want to offer my profound thanks to all the hardworking men and women in law enforcement who worked through the night to be able to get us to this point where we can confirm that there is a person of interest who has been detained. This is exactly the kind of collaboration that we trained for, and that we hope for, our partnership with the FBI, with the state police.”
The School of Engineering and the Physics Department’s Barus and Holley building was the scene of the Saturday mass shooting at the university. Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed all of the victims were students, but did not release names, according to WCVB. “This is a deeply tragic day for Brown, our families and our local community. There are truly no words that can express the deep sorrow we are feeling for the victims of the shooting that took place today at the Barus and Holley engineering and physics building,” Paxson said.

Brown University has canceled all final exams and classes that were still supposed to take place before the end of the fall semester. Provost Francis J. Doyle III announced, “Given the deeply tragic events that took place on our campus yesterday, all remaining undergraduate, graduate and medical classes, exams, and papers or projects for the Fall 2025 semester will not take place as scheduled. This choice was made out of our profound concern for all students, faculty and staff on our campus.”
Police did have video of the suspect exiting the engineering building completely shrouded in black, but it was difficult from the images to identify the person. It appears, however, that, due to a tip, police and the FBI were able to catch up with the person they believe is the shooter anyway.
We offer our prayers for the families of the two victims who died during the shooting, and also for the victims who remain severely injured in the hospital. The Brown University shooting was one of three such tragedies this weekend, alongside the killing of two U.S. soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Syria by a former member of Syrian government forces, and the murder of a dozen Jews in Australia.
