A ‘Sort of Madmen’: Transgenderism and Marxist Philosophy

The great Washington Irving once satirically commented that philosophers and scientists, in their utterly contradictory theories, sometimes seemed like madmen. And when it comes to transgender ideology, those who push it certainly are openly advocating for insanity and unreality.

It is undoubtedly true that the scientific method involves a great deal of trial and error, but Irving objected to those philosophers and scientists who emphatically stated that their theories had to be taken as absolute truth while neglecting to ascertain whether those theories most nearly matched reality. And since his Knickerbocker’s History of New York was specifically a satire, he exposed the humorous side of faulty philosophies. Little did he know how outrageous some scientists and philosophers would grow in their nonsense by the 21st century.

Below is a passage from Irving’s satirical history, which pokes fun at philosophers of all eras but seems most appropriately applicable to transgender ideologues today:

Thus it would seem that knowledge and genius, of which we make such great parade, consist but in detecting the errors and absurdities of those who have gone before, and devising new errors and absurdities, to be detected by those who are to come after us. Theories are the mighty soap-bubbles with which the grown-up children of science amuse themselves while the honest vulgar stand gazing in stupid admiration, and dignify these learned vagaries with the name of wisdom! Surely Socrates was right in his opinion, that philosophers are but a soberer sort of madmen, busying themselves in things totally incomprehensible, or which, if they could be comprehended, would be found not worthy the trouble of discovery.

Marxist philosophers definitely fall in that category. And transgenderism really is an outgrowth of Marxism to the extent that it turns “sexual identities” into the new class war and insists that we are to dictate reality instead of dealing with it.

Transgenderism is of course impossible biologically. A small percentage of the population does deal with gender dysphoria, and a much smaller percentage still has rare genetic diseases that may occasionally give an individual physical characteristics of both sexes. None of this changes the fact that a boy cannot become a girl, and a girl cannot become a boy. As for the dozens of other invented “genders”, they are pure fiction.

But they are also poisonous and dangerous fiction. The words we use and the way we talk and act absolutely influence how we think, and therefore how we shape our society. Leftists have very successfully changed many Americans’ opinions on abortion, homosexuality, welfare, and many other evils because they altered the vocabulary or ran successful sob story campaigns.

The number of American adults who identify as LGBTQ reportedly doubled between 2012 and 2024, not naturally, but because there was a huge shift in government, business, and entertainment to promote the ideology. Of my contemporaries, Gen Z, almost a fourth identify as LGBTQ, per Gallup — these are the young people who have been relentlessly propagandized in school. We are being conditioned to believe lies, and the impact is far-reaching. As GK Chesterton once noted, once people have become accustomed to irrationality, they can no longer be startled at injustice.

Truly, Marxist philosophers are a sort of madmen, but they are determined to drive us insane too.
