Mitt Romney sees a storm cloud on the horizon. It’s probably not the one that you’re thinking about, involving Johnny Football, a case of tequila, a jungle bon fire and a reggae band in Honduras. It’s the possibility that some Republicans might fight hard enough to defund Obamacare, even if it means a so-called government shutdown.
Romney, 66, warned congressional Republicans against letting emotions drive their decisions.
“I badly want Obamacare to go away, and stripping it of funds has appeal. But we need to exercise great care about any talk of shutting down government,” Romney said in the first speech of its kind since his November election loss to Obama. “What would come next when soldiers aren’t paid, when seniors fear for their Medicare and Social Security, and when the FBI is off duty?”
He continued: “I’m afraid that in the final analysis, Obamacare would get its funding, our party would suffer in the next elections, and the people of the nation would not be happy. I think there are better ways to remove Obamacare.”
I don’t know. There are moments to think, and there are moments to fight. If the GOP doesn’t kill off Obamacare now by defunding it, when will the GOP kill it off? People will start getting their addictive freebies next year. Once those start rolling out, who’s strong enough to step up and stop it?
Mitt Romney is a good man, he should be president now and we would be in better shape as a nation if he was, but “fighter” is not a word I’d use to describe him.
Also, he’s not exactly in a position to command much authority, having lost when history says he should have won, and having passed Obamacare’s predecessor in Massachusetts. It would be nice to see the Republican Party nominate a successful red state leader, for a change.
This may be the last moment we have to kill Obama’s job-killing law. Obamacare delenda est. Get. It. Done. As Sammy says, it means everything.
