What Is the ‘Awesome Deep State’ Narrative Shift All About?

Curioser and curioser!

All of a sudden, after years of corporate state media denying that such a thing as the Deep State exists at all, the New York Times, Neoliberal Bible, has suddenly shifted on a dime, announcing that not only does it exist, but it’s totally awesome and necessary.

One could be forgiven, if one consumes corporate state legacy media credulously, for being fully vexed by the recent shift in rhetoric from trusted news sources.

Via New York Times (emphasis added):

As America closes in on a major election, mistrust is brewing around the mysterious government entity that’s now denounced in scary-sounding terms — “the deep state” and “the swamp.” What do those words even mean? Who exactly do they describe?

We went on a road trip to find out. As we met the Americans who are being dismissed as public enemies, we discovered that they are … us. They like Taylor Swift. They dance bachata. They go to bed at night watching “Star Trek” reruns. They go to work and do their jobs: saving us from Armageddon.

Sure, our tax dollars pay them, but as you’ll see in the video above, what a return on our investment we get!

When we hear “deep state,” instead of recoiling, we should rally. We should think about the workers otherwise known as our public servants, the everyday superheroes who wake up ready to dedicate their careers and their lives to serving us. These are the Americans we employ. Even though their work is often invisible, it makes our lives better.

But if Donald Trump is re-elected and enacts Schedule F, that could change. He would have the power to eviscerate the so-called deep state and replace our public servants with people who work for him, not us.

In a video accompanying the article, the Times rebrands the Deep State not as a nefarious and clandestine consortium of think tanks and intelligence agencies and corporations colluding to subvert popular control of government but rather as a collection of obscure government NASA and EPA bureaucrats who love Star Trek and Pilates, who are in charge of mundane yet arguably laudable functions like cleaning water and redirecting asteroids hurdling towards Earth.

How strange.

The general pattern that these corporate state media narratives follow regarding inconvenient facts or stories — for instance, the existence of the Deep State or the harms triggered by COVID-19 “vaccine” mandates, forced masking, forced lockdowns, etc. — goes as follows, in chronological order:

  • Step #1: Hear no evil, see no evil. First, the inconvenient fact or story is ignored completely in the hopes that it won’t garner any popular momentum and will ultimately fade away. This is the ideal tactic because it requires no investment of energy or resources, entails no legal jeopardy for violations of civil liberties (censorship), and requires no denials of reality that could be used to undermine the legacy media or government’s credibility in the future.
  • Step #2: Censorship. The reason why these entities champion social media censorship and the de-monetization of independent media outlets like PJ Media is that these are the platforms where these inconvenient facts or stories often gain momentum; if they can pressure or cajole these outlets and platforms to snuff disfavored stories out in the womb, they never have to deal with them because they never get any oxygen.
  • Step #3: Attack mode. If the inconvenient fact or story won’t dissolve on its own, the next step is active denial and targeted smear campaigns against the most visible proponents of said inconvenient fact or story. This is accomplished through multiple avenues of social shaming, de-platforming, de-banking, lawfare, etc.
  • Step #4: Partial admission, damage control. The last step, when the narrative war has been largely lost and there is no putting the genie back in the bottle, is to concede to the minimal scope of facts possible and admit to the minimal amount of culpability possible to try to save face and mitigate reputational, financial, or legal risk.
