Are You Ready for a Shutdown?

September 17th, 2013 - 11:44 am

Writing just this morning about defunding ObamaCare, which I’m all for in theory, I argued, “Don’t talk to me about a government shutdown. The Democrats are begging for the GOP to give them one, and not because the Democrats are naifs.”

Then this showed up in my inbox from Rasmussen.

RASMUSSEN

I’m not there yet — one poll with a bare majority does not make a trend — but I’m finally seeing an opening. We just have to trust the GOP not to mess up, and not to get played.

Those are two Jupiter-sized ifs.

The problem with a "shutdown" is they still get pay for not going to work.

Doing nothing at work is different than doing nothing at home? At least those of us who do will have less traffic to deal with.

Considering 98% of the government is crap, what exactly is the problem with shutting it down again?

Heheh.

Titter.

Giggle.

Snicker.

You should do stand-up.

I still like the idea of passing a debt limit bill that includes a requirement to implement the PPACA as written without waivers or delays. Yes, that boils down to "Let.It.Burn."; I just like it better.

That's brilliant!

Pass a debt limit increase with a section that eliminates the HHS' power to grant waivers from Obamacare--with an enforcement clause that defunds the whole thing if waivers persist past Jan. 1, 2014.

Send that to the Senate and let Reid explain why the PPACA should not be implemented as written.

The primary obstacle to getting Obamacare defunded are the Mensheviks, not the Democrats.

In the House, the GOP needs to pass budget after budget to fund all departments (getting rid of Education isn't going to happen right now) with a proviso "none of these funds shall be used to implement the PPACA."

Let Harry Reid be the one to not bring it up in the Senate. Scream until you're blue in the face that Harry is the obstructionist. Then scream some more.

I tend to agree w/ you, Steve. But consider these two points. Apparently Obamacare is really hurting people badly. Or at least scare the hell outta them. Those that can (unions, gov. workers) are getting out. Couple that w/ the non-apocalypse that the sequester had on people's everyday lives. A government shutdown doesn't seem that bad.

To kill the thing though, people who wanted it should get it. Good and hard. Let. It. Burn.

Sequester is very different--it makes the White House into the bad guy, shutting down popular but unnecessary functions.

In a complete shutdown, the checks don't get written and the VA hospital cancels its outpatient surgeries. You've got to be darn sure you've got the public on your side before going that route.
