The entertainment industry is giving full voice to their criticism of the Russian anti-gay statute — as well they should. It is a horrid law that criminalizes behavior.

Too bad they can’t find the words to protest the treatment of women, Christians, and gays in Muslim countries.

From USA Today:

From Hollywood to Broadway, the entertainment industry is using its star power and financial muscle to raise a storm of protest over the anti-gay legislation in Russia that is battering the image of the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Actor-playwright Harvey Fierstein, British writer-actor Stephen Fry and Star Trek actor George Takei are among those who have publicly condemned the new law, fueling an uproar that is overshadowing preparations for the Feb. 7-23 Olympics.

With stars and activists using their high-profile platform to bring the issue to global attention, the gay rights crackdown in Russia has exploded into a hot-button controversy that is challenging Olympic leaders like no other since the protests over Tibet and human rights before the 2008 Games in Beijing.

President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and former Olympic athletes such as Greg Louganis have also denounced the law that prohibits the spread of “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” among minors.

The law, signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in June, imposes fines and up to 15 days in prison for violators. Hefty fines are levied for holding gay pride rallies. Foreigners can be deported.

Whether Putin is listening to the outcry is unclear, but the backlash has even triggered calls for a boycott of the games that he was instrumental in securing for Russia.

Also, the souring relations between the U.S. and Russia over National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, Syria, human rights and other issues has ratcheted up the tensions in the buildup to the Olympics. Obama canceled a planned summit meeting with Putin after Russia granted temporary asylum to Snowden.

Obama and Cameron have both ruled out a boycott because it would penalize the athletes who have trained for years to compete. The U.S.-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics and the Soviet boycott of the 1984 Los Angeles Games are widely viewed as failures.

“One of the things I’m really looking forward to is maybe some gay and lesbian athletes bringing home the gold or silver or bronze, which I think would go a long way in rejecting the kinds of attitudes that we’re seeing here,” Obama said Friday. “If Russia doesn’t have gay or lesbian athletes, then that would probably make their team weaker.”

These Hollywood types aren’t very self-aware, are they? Hundreds of millions of women, Christians, and gays are openly persecuted in Arab and other Muslim countries. Where’s this kind of outrage for them?

Fierstein — winner of Tony Awards for the play Torch Song Trilogy — wrote an op-ed piece in The New York Times last month saying Putin “has declared war on homosexuals” and calling on world leaders and the International Olympic Committee to demand the retraction of the laws under threat of a boycott.

“Mr. Putin’s campaign against lesbian, gay and bisexual people is one of distraction, a strategy of demonizing a minority for political gain straight from the Nazi playbook,” Fierstein wrote.

Fry, the British entertainer and activist, posted an open letter this week to Cameron and the IOC comparing Putin’s “barbaric, fascist law” to persecution of Jewish people in Nazi Germany.

The reason Hollywood leftists don’t protest against the cliterectomies, the lashings, the honor killings, and the executions is that in Arab countries, these are “cultural” issues. And given the cultural relativism to which most liberals subscribe, protesting Muslim treatment of gays, women, and Christians would be like saying that their culture is inferior — even savage and backwards.

Being a frequent visitor of Russia and very interested in the attempts of religious groups, usually Orthodox in Eastern Europe, to protect themselves from an active policy of homosexualization pushed by the EU and Obama foreign policy. (Check out Michael Voris re active uses of US money to force homosexual promoting policies on the Philippines.) I have listened to various prelates of Orthodoxy beg, yes, beg to keep W. European imperialism (euphemistically called "democracy") out of their countries (or as some call it the homsexual dictatorship imitating Bendict's dictatorship of relativism), specially the active promotion of homosexuality (which is the wedge for opening up sexuality to a pop-and-run-on-to-the-next-wangbang here in Germany and through out the EU-->>excessive non-procrreative sex, and homosexuality is iconic for sex excluding children, correlates with non-reproduction rates leading to the death of Western Europe. Russia is fighting right now not to disappear and you want them to affirm non-procreative sex par excellence. The Russian problem is not with people in the privacy of their homes or in their private clubs following homosexuality, it is the open, active, moralizing pushing of homosexualiiy (and its extended libertinism )in the name of democratic freedom unto a country or a culture that rejects, often religiously, such a lifestyle (sic!) and is trying to recover from the bestiality of communist secularism. I have encountered support for Putin, imploring support, in Russia, and RT can easily show the moral decadence of the West (which normally is a complaint in these pages, but not when it comes to popping away). If democracy (sic) comes to mean "sodomize your buddy in a marriage with gov. support" (again standing for open-season sex), the enemies of democracy such as Putin will be seen as the defenders of a heterosexually normatized lifestlye and hence of freedom. I love to spend the afternoon at the Orthodox Seminar on one side of the street in St. Petersburg, but detest being there in the evening when, on the otherside of the street at an international hotel, the women of the night come out to service the vistors from the WEST. There is nothing like a Westerner to make a sale object of a Russian woman.

Before the "open-minded" and non-descriminating readers of PJM start their diatribes against me, please note that I care not. I am a cultural warrior that you will get to know, I hope. In your oooze of moral indignation do note that the active pusing of homosexuality <-> libertine sex a la liberterianism is causing its casualities in your ranks, ME. Just think about the enemies you are making. It may be a moral imperative, but it is provoking dissent in the ranks of the "free" (unless you have to pay for it).

Seriously, how hard can it be to decry anti-gay legislation while in SoHo or Greenwich Village? If they want to confront this "evil", start marching in Red Square or holding protests in downtown Cairo/Riyadh , then I'll start paying attention...

Funny, when the Olympics were held in China, the World's largest slave state, I don't remember hearing a peep out of Hollywood nor Washington. Yes, Putin's Russia seems like a hateful place, but so does much of the world. I guess the standard is this--forced abortions and sterilizations are fine, but you cannot discriminate against gays or make Madonna uncomfortable. THAT kind of behavior is beyond the pale.

Ha! Glad I found this right wing gaggle of mindless geese. You herd really well. Quite an exchange of ideas here, eh? I will be glad to stop by occasionally and inject some reality into the ongoing circle jerk. Do you NOT realize that Muslim thought and the thought expressed on here by almost every poster is identical as it concerns Gay folks? The only difference is the punishment you place on them. Muslims and others kill them, and folks like those on here seek to deny them rights that they enjoy themselves. All anti-Freedom thought is based on the same baloney. Someone's favorite made up "Godfigure" (or their earthly representative) tells their mindless minions that this or that isn't "right". Too bad. If it goes against Freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution for ALL citizens, your Godfigure can go pack sand. Get it yet? You are ALL suffering from the same superiority complex based on fantasy. Why not just learn to mind your own business and let your fellow citizens do likewise. So, again, in closing, the mindset folks allow themselves to settle into, that somehow their favorite supernatural entity is somehow superior to Freedom for ALL are the same. YOU are as out to lunch on the issue as Muslims or anyone else, and if your "values" include discrimination against others, they ain't worth nothin'. You are the hypocrites. Have a nice day.

Question. If I am not gay, nothing I do is gay, none of my preferences are gay, then how much do I really support the gay agenda?

The Russian Federation is promoting a policy to increase the birth rate in order to promote future growth and stability. Why on EARTH would they permit the intrusion of decadent western homosexual culture negating all their efforts to promote marriage and child bearing?

They are NOT subservient to a corrupt media or entertainment elite like the U.S. and Christianity is experiencing a resurgence that is thwarting any efforts to promote tolerance of gays.

Of course that's what they do; it's the SOP of leftists: attack the easiest target.
It much more dangerous to protest against a muslim nation, so they pick on Russia. It's the same way where liberals are aghast at "white racism", but never comment when blacks attack whites or Asian (which happens all the time), because they're much more likely to be criticized and labled "racist" themselves. Many so-called liberals don't even really believe the things they say in that regard, they do it as a way to be protected against the wrath of the more dangerous groups - the "I'll be eaten last" attitude", since they never had the guts to criticize the REAL bad guys.

So the Russians pass laws to prevent promotion of homosexuality to minors, while Hollywood and the rest of the elites in the US follow their fixation on sodomy, even with children. Russia is looking good to me.

It's easy to protest in the U.S. They obviously don't remember that girl band that locked up for protesting against Putin's crackdown on free speech. I don't think too many are going to stand up for gays in the country.
