It appears that after a decade or two of acting like they care about law and order, Democrats are lurching back to being soft on crime. Attorney General Eric Holder indicated as much when he launched a frontal assault on “stand your ground” laws Tuesday.

From the 1960s well into the 1980s, laws regarding criminal justice and self-defense were stacked heavily against law-abiding Americans. Liberal judges routinely handed down minimal sentences after criminals had been convicted of heinous crimes. Americans who had defended themselves against criminals using force, often in their own homes, faced severe prosecution for exercising their natural right to defend their loved ones, their homes and their property. Crime rates soared and outrage built up as the legal system allowed criminal after criminal to walk free while acting in self-defense could ruin a law-abiding American’s life. Liberals did all of this in the name of “social justice,” on a theory that the system is inherently racist, poverty causes crime, and society is ultimately to blame for criminals. Crime victims by implication had it coming, and criminals are just misunderstood and should be freed after serving token sentences.

Two reactions evolved to stem the power of liberal judges and overzealous prosecutors who were making life easier for criminals. One was mandatory minimum sentencing. Legislatures passed laws tying the hands of judges so they had far less power to unleash violent criminals back onto the streets. Another was passing castle doctrine and stand your ground laws to codify the right of self-defense. These laws made it more difficult for prosecutors to grandstand and persecute Americans who had used force to defend themselves against violent criminals. State after state also passed concealed carry laws to enable Americans to exercise their Second Amendment right to carry firearms to defend themselves. This year, Illinois became the 50th state to pass concealed carry. Notably, its liberal Democrat governor, Pat Quinn, did everything he could to stop that law from passing. We would probably not have needed any of these laws had liberals simply respected the criminal justice system and the obvious and natural right of people defend themselves and their loved ones from lawbreakers.

As castle doctrine, stand your ground and concealed carry laws swept across the country, violent crime rates went down. Except, notably, in cities controlled by liberal Democrats, where strict gun control laws continue to tilt against the right of self-defense. Outside those cities, as Americans have increasingly exercised their right to bear arms and laws buttressed their right to defend themselves with deadly force if necessary, crime rates went down. Crime rates stayed down even when the economy faltered, contrary to a cherished leftist myth that poverty leads directly to crime.

Here we are in 2013, a nation with a weak economy and awash in guns yet our violent crime rate continues to go down. Up to now, criminals have operated knowing in the back of their heads that they might find themselves facing off against armed citizens. Liberals are now conspiring to remove that fear from the minds of criminals.

Without the right to defend myself and my family, none of my other rights mean a thing. Self defense is the most fundamental, bedrock right of a free man. That is why it is jealously guarded by free people everywhere, and that is why it is despised by agents of the state. If the right to defend myself is taken away, the government can take the rest of my rights at their leisure. That, I believe, is what is on trial here.

Chris W. Cox, executive director NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, claimed Holder went too far in extending the debate to "stand-your-ground" laws.

"The attorney general fails to understand that self-defense is not a concept, it's a fundamental human right," he said in a statement. "To send a message that legitimate self-defense is to blame is unconscionable, and demonstrates once again that this administration will exploit tragedies to push their political agenda."

What you say is correct, and let me repeat what I posted some time ago already:

the war against the Second Amendment rights is a war against women. I don't mean to say anything sexist but it is highly possible that having to choose between attacking a guy who is 6'4" and 250 pounds or a woman who is 5'6" and 145 pounds, a criminal will pick the woman.
The same goes for the elderly compared t the young.

So the war against the Second Amendment is a war to go back to the brutality of the law of the survival of the strongest.

Second Amendment rights make the field plain not only between the Citizens and the Government, they make possible the survival of the weaker.

Where I live, it is common for criminals to attack houses: four or five people just crack windows and doors and get in - even during the day. What an elderly citizen could do without a gun and without the Castle Doctrine that shields him/her from being sued ?

The "Stand Your Ground" law should be called "In Defense of Life" law, because that is actually what the law is! Why do we always allow radicals to name/describe laws that are enacted to protect us!

Nice, but 'innocent until proven guilty' depends on the charge, the tone and tenor of the region, and, often, whole sets of assumptions about those involved. Practically, many defendants must undo presumptions of guilt and 'help' from prosecutors to reach deals. That is not to say that most murderers or robbers or innocent, by any means, but 'innocent until proven guilty' is mostly theory.

STOP!
For the love of Mary, Just STOP calling these things "Stand Your Ground" laws. Stop letting them define the narrative by using their Loaded Catch-phrases.

Calling them Stand Your Ground just as inflammatory and dishonest as calling them “shoot first ask questions later”, and the Obama/Holder/Media Machine knows it. Why else do you think they invented the term?

Never, never ever acknowledge the term “Stand Your Ground”. It’s the same good/bad word-game they play with “affirmative acting” (racial quotas) “choice” (infanticide) and “assault weapons” (modern arms) Don’t use them, and do not PERMIT their use in your presence. Just say it like it is:

The Obama/Holder Media Empire is trying to do is to impose a NEW Duty…to RETREAT.

Say it. Say it every time the subject comes up.
Say that in all places where no such thing is currently REQIRED of a crime victim, Holder wishes to CHANGE that.

He wants to now impose on ALL of us, a NEW Duty….to Retreat.

Call them out on it everywhere the subject comes up:

“Why are you in favor of criminals?
Why do you want to change existing laws?
Why would you now suddenly penalize ME for not ceding to my aggressor?
Wouldnt that embolden HIM while endangering ME?
Why would you give HIM a “right” to advance, while requiring ME to retreat?
Just who’s side are you on, mine or the criminals?”

Do NOT EVER “Stand Your Ground”…Say “NEW duty…to retreat” for the victim…

And “NEW right…to advance” for the Criminal.

Because THAT’S what their trying to do.

I hear what you say about using terms the Lefties make up as it feeds into their narrative. That being said, we have only 2 options. (a) Stand your ground and (b) run away and hide. If option (a) is taken from us, only option (b) will be available to us. That is un-American and only suits the tyranny of Obama, Holder et al.

I, for one, will use option (a) whether or not it suits my "betters", the elite who think they can and should run my life for me. I have served my country and actually fought for it. I will not run away and hide.

Not to worry, people. Holder has announced the creation of a tip line at the DOJ to field calls from citizens who have evidence of Zimmerman's racism - you know, the usual Obama strategy of calling on citizens to inform on one another. Anywhoo, if these calls pan out Holder may divert back to persecuting Zimmerman and he'll forget all about the Stand Your Ground crusade.

I send that tip email address a note about two civil rights violations - Angela Corey's unethical concealment of exculpatory evidence and Fast & Furious.

Guns are a symbol and an instrument of personal responsibility, the anathema of the therapeutic, liberal state.

We can never let our guard down on Second Amendment rights or they will be strangled in a heartbeat. Take no assurance from Heller. A single change on the SCOTUS in the wrong direction and Heller will be overruled or distinguished away and the Second Amendment will be relegated back to an historical curiosity.

I remember how it was back then. The social engineers coined the phrase "Black Rage" to explain why black people were always breaking laws.

People didn't buy into it then (except fellow leftists) and they aren't buying into it now.

Looking like we need some Dirty Harry and Bronson movies again just to remind people what happens when the thugs have free rein.

I've heard a lot about "stand your ground" and the violence it was supposed to engender. So far, that violence appears to be the same as the "extreme weather" due to "climate change" -- it's been modeled and announced, but never seen.
Incidentally, a jury in New York somewhere just cleared a middle-aged man who shot and killed a teen he believed was attacking him. You likely haven't heard of it. The dead teen happened to be white and the man who defended himself happens to be black. The riots will start...oh, I guess they won't.
