The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee warned against “prejudging” the Muslim Brotherhood as Mohammed Morsi became Egypt’s first Islamist president today.
“During my recent visits to Cairo, I’ve had two candid discussions with the new president. He’s acknowledged that the central issue to Egypt’s future is economic. His words suggest he understands the gravity of the challenges facing Egypt,” Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) said today.
“In our discussions, Mr. Morsi committed to protecting fundamental freedoms, including women’s rights, minority rights, the right to free expression and assembly, and he said he understood the importance of Egypt’s post-revolutionary relationships with America and Israel,” he added. “Ultimately, just as it is anywhere in the world, actions will matter more than words.”
Kerry said Egypt faces many challenges, but remains a “bellwether for the long term meaning of the Arab Spring.”
“Obviously American concerns about the Muslim Brotherhood’s past statements and positions are widely shared and well understood. But it would be a mistake for us to pull back from our engagement with a free and democratic Egypt,” the senator said. “This is a time to test intentions not to prejudge them. All parties must come together to build a better future for the Egyptian people and I will continue to monitor Egypt’s political transition with great interest.”
UPDATE: The statement from the White House press office made no made of the Muslim Brotherhood.
“We look forward to working together with President-elect Morsi and the government he forms, on the basis of mutual respect, to advance the many shared interests between Egypt and the United States. We believe that it is important for President-elect Morsi to take steps at this historic time to advance national unity by reaching out to all parties and constituencies in consultations about the formation of a new government,” the press secretary said.
“We believe in the importance of the new Egyptian government upholding universal values, and respecting the rights of all Egyptian citizens – including women and religious minorities such as Coptic Christians. Millions of Egyptians voted in the election, and President-elect Morsi and the new Egyptian government have both the legitimacy and responsibility of representing a diverse and courageous citizenry.”

What do you mean? Eight years ago Kerry was the smartest man in the world. Who else could have made up that much stuff about his 45 days in combat in Vietnam? He managed to award himself three purple hearts and get back to the States in less than two months. I was totally impressed by his swiftness, I’m sure. Now I am impressed by his ability to sit on the back bench of the Senate for two decades without anyone even noticing that he was there. With that kind of stealth, I would have more success during hunting season. Most impressive, is his complete grasp of meteorology and he has never misspelled it either. As indicated in this article, he has a complete understanding of the nuances of governing a Middle Eastern power like Egypt. Sheesh, I could go on but, not being as smart as Senator Kerry, I am afraid I will run out of superlatives to describe his career. What a track record, I say.

We don’t have to prejudge the Muslim Brotherhood. We have their history, and their writings. One example is the Hamas Covenant of 1988, which includes, among many other provisions, a recitation that HAMAS is part of the Muslim Brotherhood, and an agreement to engage in an advertising campaign to convince Muslims that they have a personal, religious duty to kill every Jew on the face of the earth and re-conquer every square inch of land ever held by a “muslim” regime. Hi there fellow bloggers. My name is United States Senator John Forbes Kerry from the great state of Massachusetts. You can call me JFK if you want. I was born on December 11, 1943, although people tell me that I look at least 20 years younger. It’s probably my great hair and rugged good looks.

I am also a great war hero. I set all kinds of records for heroism when I was in Vietnam. I was grievously wounded at least three times yet continued to insist on staying in the fight when lesser men would have given up. I won the bronze star with extra V’s for extra valor and the Silver Star for defeating a whole battalion of NVA with my bare hands. Sometimes I feel like a had to carry all the water for those other ungrateful swiftboaters.
I sometimes like to chill out after a long day of serving the American people by having a double martini with my good friend Ted, although I can’t do that now as he has stopped drinking. We used to have a servant bring 21 double martinis. I got one and Ted got one for each of his fingers and each of his toes. Contrary to what some of my very few enemies say I never marry women for just their money. They must also have a pulse. BTW, did I mention that I was in Vietnam? I was also in Cambodia, so don’t forget that!
I would like to think that I am open minded, honest, polite, heroic, trustworthy and humble. And I appreciate the same qualities in others although I am realistic enough to know that no one else could come close to me.

Morsi is a graduate of USC and a former professor at Cal State Northridge. Two of his children are US citizens. What does this mean? Who knows. Could his long term immersion in the very depths of leftist culture have some impact with his thinking? It is hard to imagine that it wouldnt have some impact.

Its worth remembering that a fair amount of the Iranian Revolutionary government were educated in US colleges, yet they went in a decidedly not-friendly-to-the-US direction with their politics. At the time of the Iranian Revolution, these folks were trotted out by the US press ( almost nightly by Ted Koppel on ABC’s Nightline as I remember it) as evidence that the revolution was really pro-western, since they had gone to school in the US and spoke fluent English. History had another verdict.
We are still paying the price for the Iranian Revolution. If such a thing occurs in Egypt, the implications to world trade and economics will be worse.
