Rubin Reports

Since President Barack Obama’s trip to the Middle East was such a turning point for U.S. policy, I thought it should be summarized by showing characteristic responses of different groups. These are, of course, generalizations, and there are many variations.

One mistake that’s being made is this: from being a relaitvely bad president regarding bilateral relations and attitudes toward Israel, Obama has become a fairly normal one. His statements are then being judged by people on the right as terrible when they are merely those of his predecessors.

At the same time, Obama supporters miss the continued reservations toward Israel’s situation and policies and especially his continued regional policy to conclude that Obama is–as he tried to pressure Netanyahu to say–the best president ever for Israel.

So how do different sectors react to Obama’s trip? The responses are very interesting.

The Far Leftist: Why has Obama been so nice to Israel? He’s sold out and become just another typical president who backs Israel. How infuriating!

The Left-Liberal: Did you see how Obama told off the Israelis and demanded they make peace? Of course, the people love him and it is only the reactionary leaders who oppose a truly great president who is doing a great job. He hasn’t changed at all; he’s just found a clearer way to articulate his position.

The “Mainstream” Liberal (Current Version): We told you so! Of course Obama loves Israel despite all of that propaganda against him, and he really showed it this time. I’m so glad I voted for him twice.

The Moderate to Conservative: Oh, no! Obama has pulled it off again! Now the Israelis love him and we’ll never get American Jews to oppose him. How depressing!

The Militant Conservative: Ha! Did you hear what he said in this speech and that speech? Insulting Israel and just attacking it while apologizing for the Palestinian side! This is just one more proof of his enmity! How infuriating!

The Palestinian View:  Obama been so nice to Israel! He’s sold out and become just another typical president who back Israel. How infuriating! Well, we expected this, so we won’t negotiate and will try either to engage in struggle or parlay our recognition as a state into getting the 1967 borders with no concessions.

The Islamists: Of course he’s just another Christian crusader as we’ve always known. He’s never helped us but just retreated out of weakness because he’s afraid of us!  This has removed the illusions that diplomacy might work. Only armed struggle will ultimately wipe Israel off the map!

The Serious Israeli Observer: Thank goodness! After more than four years of hard work and with the help of the other side’s intransigence, we got Obama to see reality in policy if not always in rhetoric, which is far less important.  Perhaps a narrow escape from what would have been the most anti-Israel president in history by far. Look, the American people elect the president and then we have to deal with whomever they choose. Sure hope he wakes up about the Islamists and stays tough on Iran.

This tea partier's response: Obama got PM Netanyahu to apologize to a Turkish Islamist tyrant for an overt Turkish-sponsored act of war against Israel. The act involved a Turkish arms ship attempting to break an Israeli weapons blockade against rearming Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The blockade was based on thousands of previous attacks from the Gaza strip on innocent Israeli citizens.

"I saw nothing, I heard nothing, I know nothing. i was not there. I did not even get up this morning".

It's like Barry Rubin slept through all of Obama's time as President except for one day a couple of days ago. And then went back to sleep missing Obama's, despite "sequestration", giving the Palestinian Authority another $500 million that Congress had locked up.

Well this moderate conservative is not reacting as the good professor has described because i agree that we are seeing an actual change in Obama's usual behavior as a post colonial college professor to that of a more normal American president. I think we all recall how Bush moderated himself after his shellacking in 2006. I think Obama may well be winding his neck in regarding foreign affairs because he has been more interested all along in his domestic agenda. I think if has actually brokered a rapprochement between Turkey and Israel that he is trying to calm things down given the instability in Syria. I think that puts both Turkey and Israel in a better position to deal with Syria going forward. I would also say that of Obama's recent appointments Kerry is the best of them because he actually has some knowledge of foreign affairs. I was genuinely shocked to hear him on CSPAN in 2005 perform well above the way he campaigned for the presidency during a foreign policy hearing. Like Hillary he is not from the far left of the democratic party and I think his appointment signals that perhaps Obama is seriously looking to move his foreign policy back from the post colonial brink where he finds himself supporting the founding organization of Islamism.

[The Ethiopian has not changed his skin, nor the leopard his spots: I told you so.]

The above bracketed sentence may be opened when Obama attempts to strongarm Israel into dismembering itself according to the "Palestinian" wish list, in exchange for his promises to "protect" Israel from Iranian nukes.

Probable wait: between nine and twelve months.

Yeah, things are looking up. The State Department just released five hundred million dollars to the PA after the sequester that shut down White House tours for the children (unless it's corporate pay to play in the Lincoln bedroom). Me thinks one should give more credence to what he does rather than what he says.

Maybe Netanyahu's apology is just part of pragmatic realpolitik.

Personally, I think in time that it'll become apparent that it was Netanyahu who demonstrated the genuine statesmanship. Simply, look at Netanyahu's rock-solid background and compare it with the airy nothingness of Obama's. He's all facade, and a mixed one at that. [pun alert]

These squawking crows on behalf of Obama are the shortsighted ones, even though as a claque they may very well prompt that un-noble Nobel Committee of instinctive Obama-promoters to reward Obama with some sort of "Oak Leaf Cluster" to wear in his lapel.

Remember, there's a lot more going on out of sight. It's still much too early to judge results of this peculiar development.

By his 20 year attendance in Jeromy Wright's so-called church, by his saying "The Arabic Call to Prayer is the most beautiful sound on Earth", by his celebrating Ramadan in the White House, by his 2009 speech in Cairo praising Islam, by his call to go back to the pre 1967 war borders, by his giving the Muslim Brotherhood and their auxiliaries entrance to the White House, the State Department and even the military, by his deep bowing to the Saudi King, by his declaring "The future does not belong to those who insult the prophet of Islam" - By each of these things Obama's calling is plainly revealed. That all united should fail to enlighten the competent inquirer is almost inconceivable.

new category: those who got lulled by the rhetoric only to find it was all a ruse so that Kerry could immediately re-start The Process whilst simultaneously disrupting Israel's Pesach.

Sorry, may I alter that from "armchair general" to "professional rabble rouser" as he is largley a promoted actvisit isn't he?

And that type will pretty much say anything necessary, fact or fiction in order to be heard and followed. But I think they are being forced to face facts now and will continue to do so from here onward. Obama will find his mojo or become Putin's bendo.

This turn-around of Mr. Obama is a good lesson in human types and traits.

Once his type (armchair general) realise that no one will listen to them they will revert to reality.

All any of the new left want is to rule by voice alone. (They are lazy at heart)
They and he were right, America was the devil, and the Mideast was listening. (So were Russia and China)

But that meant that they didnt have to listen any more. Or comply with anything America proposed.

Now, well he has found someone who will listen again. It is called Israel. I predict a rediscovery of all our allies coming very soon.

One but only wishes to be heard.
