What's the Measure of Marketshare?

Who is the leader in global personal computer sales? That depends entirely on what you label a “personal computer.” Horace Dediu calculated marketshare with and without tablets, in 2009 and 2012. The results shocked me.

Apple has owned the $1,000 and up market for a few years now, as the Windows vendors have been locked in a low-margin price war. But if you stick tablets in with PCs, then Apple is also one of the — if not the — major player in the $499-$829 market.

And they’re taking over that space with a high-margin iPad instead of a zero-margin netbook.
