“Labels don’t matter anymore.” -Barrack Obama, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, ad infinitum.
I have a question, and I’ll ask it as nicely as I know how: What the hell does Barack Obama think words are?
Words are labels. They’re the sounds (and sound-pictures) we attach to objects, ideas, desires and, yes, even to political parties and to the people who belong to them. Words – labels – are how we communicate what we know and what we think and what we want to other people. Getting “past” labels means getting past words… and that means existing in some never-never land, where there are no concepts or ideas.
Then again, given his voting record, maybe labels shouldn’t matter to Obama, after all.
