Jared Leto Wore a Pink Pussy-Bow Blouse in Outfit ‘Channeling Jesus Christ’ at Met Gala Dinner

Many Christians expressed outrage over the Roman Catholic theme of Tuesday’s Met Gala dinner, where celebrities dressed up as popes, angels, and even Jesus Christ.

Few seemed to notice that actor Jared Leto dressed as Jesus Christ, but wore a pink pussy-bow blouse.

“The Academy Award winner took on the Met Gala red carpet wearing a soft blue Gucci suit with navy lapels over a pink pussy bow blouse,” US Weekly reported. “The outfit, combined with his long hair and the night’s theme – Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination – caused viewers on Twitter to assume he was channeling Jesus Christ himself.”

Comedian Adam Carolla quipped, “Not sure if this is Jesus Christ or Jared Leto.”

Wine podcaster Kelly Keegs pointed out the “obvious,” that Leto was dressed as Jesus.

As for the pussy-bow, Melania Trump grabbed attention for wearing the same kind of blouse Jared Leto wore.

“Melania Trump watched her husband, Donald Trump, at last night’s presidential debate wearing a fuchsia pussy-bow blouse,” Vanity Fair‘s Lauren Le Vine wrote. “Don’t laugh; that’s the name of this style of blouse with a bow tied at the neck, named after the ones frequently tied around cats’ necks. And, as we all know, cats are sometimes called pussycats. Cut out the cat part, and what do you get? A pussy bow.”

Le Vine noted that Melania probably did not think of the blouse’s name, but the Internet took notice. “Unfortunately she failed to see the irony in wearing a style of shirt with ‘pussy’ in the name. The Internet was quick to point it out, though.”

Yet no one seems to have realized Jared Leto’s insulting fashion statement. Jared Leto, the actor who dove deep into the character of the Joker for “Suicide Squad” (2016), has become known for fashion statements. It seems likely he knew exactly what he was doing.

While many Roman Catholics may consider Rihanna’s pope outfit extremely offensive, they may want to take a second look at Jared Leto. This actor literally wore a garment known as a “pussy-bow blouse” to dress up as Jesus Christ, whom Christians consider the Son of God.

Hosting a Roman Catholic-themed dinner may not be offensive in itself. Cardinal Timothy Dolan attended the Met Gala dinner, and did not express any offense. In fact, he tweeted a message about God’s beauty in conjunction with the event.

“In the Catholic imagination, the True, the Good & the Beautiful have a name: Jesus Christ, who revealed Himself as the Way, the Truth & the Life. The truth, goodness & beauty of God is reflected all over, even in fashion. The world is shot through with His glory,” Dolan tweeted, using the hashtag “Heavenly Bodies.”

Even so, commentators like Piers Morgan were right to point out that if the gala’s theme was Muslim or Jewish, the world would be in an uproar.

“Christianity, it would seem, is fair game for a mocking fashion parade,” Morgan quipped. He said he is “not a big one for ‘cultural appropriation’ fury,” and attacked the backlash against Utah teen Keziah Daum’s Chinese prom dress as “utterly absurd.”

“But there was widespread rage towards her from PC-crazed liberals across America, and it’s the inconsistent and hypocritical LACK of widespread rage from PC-crazed liberals across America about last night’s Met Gala that ironically makes me angry,” Morgan wrote. “Why is it deemed unacceptable to wear a red Chinese dress to a prom, but acceptable to lampoon an entire religion at a celebrity gala?”

Excellent question.
