So, here’s some swell news to start the weekend off right. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said that if we knew what he knows about terror threats in this country, we’d “never leave the house.”
Kelly was interviewed on Fox and Friends on Friday and said the terror threat is “worse than we realize,” pointing out there had been four major terror attacks in the last week, by “more or less the same groups,” in Manchester, England, in Egypt (where 28 Coptic Christians were murdered), on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, and in Indonesia.
“It’s everywhere. It’s constant. It’s nonstop. The good news for us in America is we have amazing people protecting us every day. But it can happen here almost any time,” Kelly said.
As I say, great weekend news. I was pointed to this story, and asked what Kelly might mean by this and why he’s scaring people with this kind of talk.
Of course, I don’t know what he meant, but here’s what I think. First of all, Secretary Kelly has lots more information than we do on the status of all the potential threats they’re tracking, and he knows that it’s his responsibility to do something about it, while we the American populace go along depending on him and the people who work for him to keep us from ever needing to know what they’re worried about. Why say it? I suppose it could just be an unguarded moment, but I think it was on purpose: to let us know that he is worried about it, because it’s his job. It doesn’t mean that we can forget it completely, but we can be sure there is someone minding the store.
Which is the way it should be, if you think about it.
