Two Chicago Cops Shot in Latest Ambush Attack on Police

Two undercover police officers were shot in Chicago at around 9 p.m. last night in the latest “indiscriminate ambush” attack on police.

As the pair were driving through the “Back of the Yards neighborhood” to follow up on an earlier investigation, two vehicles pulled up to the officers and someone from one of those vehicles opened fire on them with a “high-powered weapon,” police said.

“The occupants began firing shots indiscriminately in the direction of the officers,” the Police Department said in a statement. “The officers returned fire.” It is not believed they hit anyone. Both vehicles sped off. One of them was found near 37th Street and Racine Avenue, less than two miles away, according to a source citing preliminary information.

Both officers survived the attack — one was hit in the arm and hip, the other in the back.

Thomas Murdock, 51, who was in a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts, described what he heard: “It was like whack, whack, whack. Big guns. Next thing I know, I find out police got shot,” Murdock said. “The Dunkin’ Donuts lady was like, ‘What the (expletive) are they shooting for?’ My mind was like, ‘Holy s— ! I hope they don’t run in.’ ’’

They were taken to Stroger Hospital, where they initially were in serious condition but stable. Officials said their injuries were not life-threatening. One of the officers was released from the hospital Wednesday morning, according to Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

“As the Superintendent stated, an assault rifle was recovered last night from a vehicle seized by police,” Guglielmi said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. The police “Gun Lab has expedited the processing of ballistic evidence and the trace of that weapon.”

A second weapon was also found, and three people were taken into custody, police said.

“It’s just another example of how dangerous this job is,” Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said outside Stroger. “And I think people take it for granted that when police officers come to work every day, they put their lives on the line every single day they get in their car.

“Listen, if they will fire at police officers like that, they they have no thought process in terms of firing at other citizens of this great city,” Johnson added. “So we are going to get them.”

There have been several gangland, anti-police ambush-type shootings in recent days.

Oklahoma Deputy David Wade was repeatedly shot and killed on Tuesday while serving an eviction notice.

Logan County Sheriff Damon Devereaux told KFOR that Deputy Wade was serving an eviction notice about 9:15 Am at a residence along Mulhall Road near I-35, when he was shot several times in the face and body by the suspect, Nathan LeForce.  He was able to return fire but Leforce was hot hit.

A Detroit Police officer is in the hospital fighting for his life after being shot in the head on Sunday night.

Two Detroit Police Officers responded to a domestic violence call at Joy Rd and Wyoming Ave at around 10:30 PM Sunday night, according to Detroit PD Chief James Craig.

The officers, who were not aware that any weapons were present, knocked on the door of the home. The suspect then emerged with a .25 caliber semi-automatic weapon and opened fire on the officers.

Officer Johnson’s partner fired multiple rounds at the gunman, 46-year-old James Ray, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man gunned down a state trooper in a Wawa parking lot in a Wilmington suburb on April 26. The gunman was killed the next morning in a gun battle with law enforcement after a standoff at his home.

According to the Officer Down memorial page, there have been 15 officer deaths by gunfire and 43 officer deaths overall so far this year.
