Howard University President Wayne A.L. Fredrick recently met with Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. That’s pretty much it.
As a result of that meeting, Fredrick has been under fire at the college, with some calling the school a “Trump plantation” and others targeting Fredrick with racial slurs:
Students at Howard University have deemed their institution the “Trump plantation” because its president recently met with Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
In fact, according to DCist, some anonymous vandals graffitied the school’s sidewalks with “the Trump plantation” Tuesday morning, disparaging their school’s president for being friendly with the Trump administration.
“Welcome to the Trump Plantation/Overseer: Wayne A.L. Frederick,” was painted in the middle of campus, accompanied by other derogatory remarks such as “HBCU initiative? Wayne Coonin’ for Howard? NOT ON MY WATCH!”
“Wayne Frederick doesn’t care about black people,” another vandal declared, demanding to “make Howard black again.”
The intense backlash comes on the heels of Frederick’s recent meeting with Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, whom he said he was “pleased” to meet with.
“Howard University is pleased that Betsy DeVos, the new Secretary of Education, chose to visit our institution as her first official campus visit,” Frederick announced in a statement following the meeting. “We have a longstanding, successful relationship with the Department of Education, and I look forward to advancing this relationship under the Secretary’s leadership.”
Basically, these students want to be in a bubble.
They want democracy, but only if the government is made up of people they like. Otherwise, even trying to work with the legally elected government makes one a race traitor. Or something.
The demand to “make Howard black again” couldn’t be more racist. Clearly, non-blacks aren’t welcome at Howard and blacks aren’t really black if they don’t conform to unity of thought.
Students at Howard are also demanding Trump be banned from the campus and that, in the future, they receive 24-hour notice of any interaction with the administration. They are also demanding that Howard cut themselves off from all federal funding — and it’s not clear if students realize their Pell Grants and federal student loans would no longer cover their tuition.
Their education, somewhere along the way — either at Howard or back home — failed them. They don’t comprehend how much hate and anger they are spewing, and how none of that is coming from Betsy DeVos. These students’ futures will be rough should they not practice some introspection soon.
