'Basket of Deplorables'? What Happened to Hillary the Uniter?
Hillary Clinton insulted a huge swath of the American public on Friday after she for months portrayed herself as a "uniter" and bashed Trump for his "name-calling rhetoric."
Speaking at a big-ticket fundraiser in New York City yesterday, Hillary Clinton called half of Trump supporters a “basket of deplorables” because they hold “irredeemable” views on on pretty much everything.
“To just be grossly generalist, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call ‘the basket of deplorables,’” Clinton told donors gathered at a Manhattan restaurant. “Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that, and he has lifted them up.”
“He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people, now have 11 million,” she continued, referencing Trump’s campaign hire of Breitbart News’ Steve Bannon. “He tweets and retweets offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric.”
Apparently it is a line she has been using behind closed doors for weeks:
Donald Trump and his son hit back hard on Twitter:
Clinton's insulting, divisive rhetoric stands in stark contrast to her admirable, unifying remarks at the Democratic National Convention:
“I will be a President for Democrats, Republicans, and independents," Clinton promised during her Democratic nomination acceptance speech on July 28. "For the struggling, the striving and the successful. For those who vote for me and those who don’t. For all Americans together.”
After living through eight years of "Divider-in-Chief" Barack Obama's divisive "community organizing," in which he pitted Americans against each other for political gain, many Americans considered her comments to be a breath of fresh air.
Clinton-the-Uniter also made a point of rejecting Trump's "name-calling" and "temper tantrums."
Yet a Clinton spokesman last night on Twitter stood by Clinton's insulting name-calling:
