If there’s one person leftists seem to dislike more than Milo Yiannopoulos, it’s Ben Shapiro. The unassuming conservative commentator and editor of The Daily Wire has been met with protests all across the nation when speaking at college campuses, though that doesn’t stop him from continuing to do so.
Now, antifa-aligned groups have decided Shapiro’s speech at the University of Utah needs to be shut down.
Antifa-affiliated groups have announced plans to disrupt a Ben Shapiro speech at the University of Utah.
The editor-in-chief of the Daily Wire, who recently held a speaking event at UC Berkeley that met resistance from left-wing extremists, plans to deliver a scheduled speech at the University of Utah this Wednesday night.
Leftist groups from the Students for a Democratic Society, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán, and Black Lives Matter-SLC have issued a statement announcing their intention to “shut down” the conservative speaker to prevent him from delivering his address.
“We have no shame in saying that we intend to shut down Ben Shapiro. This is not a decision we came to based on youthful emotions, or out of some desire for the world to be “one big safe space.” This decision was arrived at based on a real, material understanding of the political environment of Utah, and the material effects of an emboldened far right.”
The Antifa-aligned groups describe Shapiro as “far-right” despite his harsh criticism of Donald Trump and his supporters.
The groups claim that Shapiro’s criticisms of pro-LGBT causes and their tactics are tantamount to lynching gays in the streets or something.
The truth is that many LGBT rights groups do actively attack religious institutions for adhering to scripture regarding homosexuality. For better or worse, that scripture has some pretty specific ideas on the subject. Many of these groups are essentially demanding that these religious bodies disregard their foundational beliefs.
The reality is that Shapiro is a pretty mainstream thinker from the right, not some “out there” scion of the alt-right. In fact, Ben Shapiro, who regularly offers sharp and regular criticism of the Trump administration, is probably the least likely commentator on the right to be protested, yet protests follow him everywhere he goes.
Antifa and their allies seek to shut down speakers like Shapiro simply because they refuse to toe any line they care to draw. He thinks for himself, will criticize anyone he thinks needs to be criticized, and lets the chips fall where they may.
Meanwhile, antifa–which claims to be anti-fascist–seeks to silence the Jewish guy. Ah, Hitler would be proud.
