The gunman who fatally shot four Marines and wounded a police officer in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Thursday has been identified by CBS News as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez. According to CBS, Abdulazeez is from Phoenix, Arizona. (CBS updated its post to say his home is in Hixson, Tennessee, which is a few miles from Chattanooga.)
The shootings occurred at two military recruiting and training centers that are eight miles apart. Police have not yet established why someone named Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez would be targeting U.S. military personnel at U.S. military facilities. “His motive is not yet known.”
But an Islamic State Twitter account tweeted a warning about the attack at 10:34 am. UPDATE: The tweet was sent out at 12:34 PST.
As Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch noted, the shooting started “around 10:30 or 10:45 a.m,” according to reports.
The Islamic State has repeatedly called on supporters to murder American military personnel here in the U.S.
Correction: The tweet was originally posted at 12:34 PST — hours after the attack. The ISIS tweeter may have been just crowing. It has not yet been established that there are any ties between the shooter and the Islamic State.
