Secretary of State John Kerry’s victory lap over the Mideast peace process may have been cut short, but now he gets to run around with a poll showing his higher approval rating than his boss.
In a new Gallup poll out this morning, Kerry had a 60 percent approval rating, compared to 51 percent for Vice President Joe Biden and 45 percent for President Obama.
The poll was conducted Sept. 5-8, in the heat of the Syria debate.
Eighty-one percent of Democrats approve of Kerry, who unsuccessfully ran for president against George W. Bush, and 55 percent of independents approve. That number dips to 36 percent among Republicans.
Obama enjoys 80 percent approval from Democrats but just 38 percent among Independents and 9 percent among Republicans.
Gallup pollsters said they never asked for an approval rating on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, so don’t have a comparative analysis.
In 2005, though, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had a higher approval rating than President Bush.
Gallup did find that Biden’s triumph over Obama in the poll is “the opposite of the historical norm.”
