New Stupid Gun Meme: Insurance Will Reduce Accidental Shootings

They actually believe this stuff.

“I believe that if we get the private sector and insurance companies involved in gun safety, we can help prevent a number of gun tragedies every year,” said David P. Linsky, a Democratic state representative in Massachusetts who wants to require gun owners to buy insurance. He believes it will encourage more responsible behavior and therefore reduce accidental shootings. “Insurance companies are very good at evaluating risk factors and setting their premiums appropriately,” he added.

So that’s what’s been missing!

Let’s ignore the fact that Linsky is a lawyer at a firm that lists “personal injury” cases first among its areas of expertise and that there just might be a business angle here (“How do you know the insurance company is treating you fairly and giving you everything you deserve? Call Dipwad and Associates for a free consultation today!”).

Or let’s not. This is all about business, not safety. Legal gun owners are already some of the most responsible people around and being shorter on cash isn’t going to greatly improve that. There’s money here for insurers, attorneys and the bureaucrats needed for another layer of regulation to monitor.
