Why hasn't Obama asked Assad to step down?

Though he has finally publicly condemned Iranian involvement in Bashar al-Assad’s murderous crackdown on his own people, Barack Obama still has not called for Assad – who is far more brutal than Mubarak – to step down. Where does his strange hierarchy of homicidal dictators come from?
