The UN Gets a Slap on the Wrist from Congress...

… a mild one anyway. By a 57-40 margin, the Senate voted to cut the US percentage of the United Nations peacekeeping budget from 27.1 to 25 percent. Considering the recent Oil-for-Food and sexual abuse scandals (by those same peacekeepers), I was surprised the vote was even that close. The best defense against the UN’s kleptocratic behavior, it would seem to me, would be to withhold money until the organization reforms. But what’s interesting here is that the Administration, for reasons unclear to me, opposed this cut. They were supported in this vote by some, but obviously not all, Democrats. What’s behind this? [Not the State Department again?-ed. Always a good bet.]
