Well, maybe not… But this ranking of the world’s best newspapers from a survey conducted by Zurich-based Internationale Medienhilfe (does that explain the presence of a Swiss paper at number five?) contains at least one surprise for me, although not in the top two positions. The Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal would be numbers one and two on my list as well (possibly in reverse order).
Not reading German, I have little experience of Frankfurter Allgemeine, but the presence of Le Monde at number four is a real head-scratcher. I find the French paper extremely thin on reporting and largely a semi-highbrow daily opinion journal for that country’s elite. The decline of The New York Times, formerly number one, to number six was to be expected.
