The Trump campaign beat expectations and raised a smart $51 million in June. About $26 million of that was raised by the campaign with the rest being raised by a joint venture with the Republican National Committee.

Hillary Clinton raised $68 million in June with $40 million raised by her campaign and the rest raised with the DNC and state parties.

Politico:

The campaign didn’t disclose its cash on hand, a decision coming after its paltry $1.3 million at the end of May sparked panic across the GOP.

The Trump campaign itself raised more than $26 million in June, it said. The campaign said its first fundraising email reaped $3 million in one day, which Trump personally matched, even though an outside analytics company said the message went to 60 percent of its recipients’ spam folders. The emails became more numerous and sophisticated over the course of the month, using a scattershot of conservative distribution lists and more advanced techniques such as A/B testing.

Another $19.9 million came through the joint fundraising agreement between Trump, the RNC and several state parties, and the other $6.6 million went through the joint fundraiser with Trump and the RNC. The campaign said it received donations from more than 400,000 supporters, with 94 percent of those giving $200 or less.

Trump personally contributed $3.8 million in June, bringing his total to $55 million.

“We just started our fundraising efforts in the last week of May and we are extremely pleased with the broad-based support in the last five weeks for the Trump Campaign and Trump Victory,” campaign finance chairman Steve Mnuchin said in a statement.

Is anyone asking why they started their fundraising the last week in May? That’s the story of the Trump campaign; a day late and several tens of millions of dollars short.

It’s now 4 months to election day. Hillary Clinton will raise north of $900 million if trends hold. Donald Trump may raise $350-400 million – if he’s as successful in future months as he was in June. Does it really matter that Hillary will double up Trump in ad expenditures?

Trump’s notion of making up for not having a big ad budget with free media appearances presupposes that the networks will virtually ignore Hillary Clinton as they basically ignored almost the entire GOP field in the primaries. This is not going to happen. Hillary may not be as big a draw as Trump, but networks will still be eager to sit down with her one on one. Whatever advantage Trump had in the primaries as far as being able to dominate the airwaves and cable news, it will not materialize in the general election.
