On Friday morning, the House approved a continuing resolution that would fund the government through mid-December while defunding Obamacare.
The measure now moves on to the Senate, where Democrats are already working on language to strip Obamacare defunding from the bill.
If the Senate passes the CR without defunding Obamacare, a period of intense negotiations is expected within the House, which will insist that defunding remain in the bill. At stake: a government shutdown on October 1 if no agreement is reached.
Some Republicans believe the effort to defund Obamacare is doomed to failure and that any subsequent government shutdown will be blamed on them. Other GOP members believe that, regardless of the odds, the attempt to defund Obamacare must be made even at the risk of shutting down the government.
