While more and more people are turning to social media to get their news these days, it certainly shouldn’t be the source of all news. Unfortunately Chuck Gates, a dad from Virginia, recently got some unsettling news through Facebook. He was driving through his neighborhood and hit some unusual traffic. He soon learned that the source of it was an accident involving an SUV and a school bus—the school bus on which his daughter was riding!

Ernesto Blackbourne, who was driving a stolen SUV and who was later charged with a DUI, grand larceny and driving without a license, ran through a stop sign and into the bus.

“The block before the intersection was closed off,” Gates said. “I realized the road was closed but wasn’t sure why so I drove around. Traffic was terrible in Bon Air and I didn’t realize the cause of the traffic until my wife texted me.”

CBS News reported:

“Unfortunately we didn’t learn about it until we’d seen it on social media,” [Gates] said. “After that the school notified, and now the school has apologized.

“They said in the future they will make sure that the process is implemented in the correct manner in the future.”

A Chesterfield school spokesperson told CBS 6 that the five [J.C. Henning Elementary] students were on the bus and uninjured, and confirmed that the school directly contacted the parents.

Luckily, the children were unharmed and Gates was soon reunited with his daughter.
