Rubio to PJM: 'We Don't Need an IRS as Big as It Is'

Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio told PJ Media that the Senate should exercise more oversight of the Internal Revenue Service, adding that Congress should reduce the size of the IRS by simplifying the tax code.

PJ Media asked Rubio on Capitol Hill what he thinks should be the next step for Congress in addressing the IRS targeting tea party and other conservative organizations.

“Full investigation – like they’re doing oversight hearings in the House,” Rubio said.

“I wish there were more going on in the Senate.”

The House Ways and Means Committee held a hearing on Tuesday with six groups whose tax-exempt applications were delayed by the IRS.

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz joined lawmakers who have said the U.S. should adopt a “simple flat tax” and “abolish” the IRS.

“I think we ought to abolish the IRS and instead move to a simple flat tax where the average American can fill out taxes on postcard,” Cruz said.

“Put down how much you earn, put down a deduction for charitable contributions, home mortgage and how much you owe. It ought to be a simple one-page postcard, and take the agents, the bureaucracy out of Washington and limit the power of government.”

Rubio was asked if he agrees with Cruz that Congress should begin dismantling the IRS by pulling back on its reach.

“I believed that before the scandal. I think our tax code is way too complicated. We don’t need an IRS as big as it is and we wouldn’t need it that big if we had a simplified tax code,” Rubio told PJ Media.
