Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz clarified his position on impeachment of President Obama over the Benghazi terror attack controversy.

“You’ve said impeachment is on the table for Benghazi,” PJ Media said to Chaffetz, a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, on Capitol Hill.

“No, I said I’m not taking it off the table; there’s a big difference,” he responded.

National Review reported on Monday that Chaffetz said Congress should consider impeaching President Obama over the administration’s handling of the Sept. 11, 2012, terror attack in Benghazi, which claimed the life of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three consulate workers.

“This is an administration embroiled in a scandal that they created,” he said. “It’s a cover-up. I’m not saying impeachment is the end game, but it’s a possibility, especially if they keep doing little to help us learn more.”

PJ Media asked Chaffetz, also a member of the House Judiciary Committee, if he has the same position on the IRS scandal with regards to impeachment.

“We’re not to that point yet,” he said.

Chaffetz told PJ Media that overall, impeachment is “not the goal, it’s not the endgame but I’m not taking it off the table.”

Former IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman testified before the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday about the IRS making conservative groups meet special requirements for tax-exempt status.

Montana Democratic Sen. Max Baucus, the committee’s chairman, and Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch, the ranking member, have sent a letter to the IRS requesting an explanation.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough and other senior officials knew that the IRS was targeting conservative groups but did not inform President Obama.

Despite this, Carney said Obama “believes it’s entirely appropriate that some matters are not appropriate to convey to him and this is one of them.”
