On Tuesday, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) released a powerful new ad exposing the Democrats’ fever-dream of impeaching President Donald Trump and urging the “adults in the room” to stand up against a partisan witch hunt that abuses the Founders’ intent for impeachment.
“They never wanted him to be president. They never even thought it was possible,” the ad begins. “But then America spoke. And when President Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, the left lost it.”
The ad moves from Trump’s descent on the escalator at Trump Tower to his historic campaign upset in 2016 to the angry mobs rioting in protest.
“This impeachment sham started the day he was elected,” the voiceover continues.
Then the ad cuts to a photo of The Washington Post on January 20, 2017, and audio of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), saying, “The first headline in The Washington Post before the president was inaugurated was they were going to impeach him.”
Then comes the litany of Democrats calling for impeachment: Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.); Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) shouting, “Impeach the motherf**ker!”; Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) saying, “I’m concerned that if we don’t impeach this president, he will get re-elected”; and finally, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) saying, “This is about preventing a potentially disastrous outcome from occurring next year.”
Trump chimes in, “They’re impeaching me. You know why? Because they want to win an election. And that’s the only way they can do it.”
After this interlude, the voiceover resumes: “So let’s be clear: this is not some neutral judgment that Democrats came to reluctantly. [Pelosi fist-bumps Bill Maher] It’s not some somber moment or serious exercise for the left. It is the pre-determined end of a partisan crusade.”
The ad shows footage of Pelosi’s souvenir impeachment pens — which, as PJ Media’s Megan Fox noted, were shaped like bullets.
Then comes the final call to action: “An angry mob is at the gate, but the United States Senate has the watch. The Senate exists for a moment like this. So it’s time for the adults in the room to have their seat at the table.”
This closing line echoed McConnell’s blistering speech the day after Democrats in the House voted to impeach President Trump.
“The Senate’s duty is clear,” he declared. “Only one outcome will preserve core precedents rather than shatter them into bits in a fit of partisan rage.” McConnell urged the Senate to reject the articles of impeachment in order to “serve the stabilizing, institution-preserving, fever-breaking role for which the United States Senate was created.”
Indeed, that is the role of the Senate — and Republican senators would be wise to heed the message. As of Tuesday night, it appears they have. Every single Republican senator voted against Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) amendment to subpoena the Trump administration for documents. The line is holding.
