One of the persistent narratives from the Left about President Donald Trump is that he supposedly hates the disadvantaged. They’re convinced he only wants to help his rich buddies.
However, along with record low unemployment numbers, Trump’s policies helped two million Americans get off food stamps just during his first year.
Per the USDA, which oversees the food stamp program: “Federal spending for SNAP totaled $68.0 billion or 4 percent less than in the previous fiscal year. … This was also 15 percent less than the historical high of $79.9 billion set in FY 2013.”
To be fair, this is the fourth straight year that the number of Americans receiving the assistance dropped, which means it also happened under President Obama’s administration.
The driving force, however, was individual states stepping up to restore work requirements. In 2009, President Obama allowed states to waive work requirements.
Thirteen Alabama counties saw food stamp use drop 85 percent between January and May 2017 once work requirements were put in place for childless adults. More than two dozen counties in Georgia saw food stamp participation drop precipitously after work requirements were restored.
Notice the Left isn’t using this as a counter to those who bring up “welfare queens” and generational welfare families. They always claim that the vast majority of people who receive assistance are just having a rough go of things, but will get back to work as soon as they can.
But when we have such massive drops when people are forced to go back to work to receive welfare, the truth comes out. Some people abuse the system when the system incentivizes them to do so.
Regardless of the cause, people getting off food stamps is great news for the American taxpayer, but especially for the Americans proud to be on their own again.
