Homeless Man Who Gave Up Last $20 Buys New Home With Donations

Johnny Bobbit was homeless, living on the streets, and struggling just to survive. Through all of that, however, he never let go of his humanity.

When he saw a woman stranded on the side of the road, he stepped up to help because it was the right thing to do. He gave her his last $20 for gas to get her home safe and sound.

That woman, Kate McClure, wanted to do something special, so she set up a GoFundMe to help Bobbit.

McClure’s goals were simple. She wanted to get Bobbit enough money for a few months’ rent and some dependable transportation. However, the story blew up, and she ended up raising over $400,000 dollars for this Marine Corps veteran.

He is homeless no more. In fact, he’s gone from homeless to homeowner.

“The feeling is indescribable and it’s all thanks to the support and generosity that each and every one of you has shown,” said Bobbit. “I’ll continue to thank you every single day for the rest of my life.”

In addition to the home, McClure notes that Bobbit was able to buy the car of his dreams. Of course, with that kind of money, it could be virtually anything, right? So what did Bobbit buy? Porsche? Ferrari?

Apparently, that was the car of his dreams. The fact that it’s not an extravagant purchase bodes well for Bobbit’s future. So does the way the dispersal of the more than $400,000 raised.

Two trusts have been set up for Bobbit. One is a retirement trust. The other will disperse a small “salary” for him each year, guaranteeing him at least some income and probably enough to take care of property taxes if nothing else.

A bank account in Bobbit’s name has also been set up to help him stay afloat until he can find a job.

If this isn’t enough to help him get back on his feet, not much will. That’s not to say it will be easy. No work history over a long period of time will create challenges for him getting a new job. He’ll basically have to start from scratch. However, he’s also got a huge leg up thanks to the generosity of so many people, especially Kate McClure.
