Although her fellow Democrats over in the House of Representatives are finally yielding to the fringe mob on the subject of impeaching President Trump, Sen. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) isn’t on board with the idea.
Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) said in a new interview that she opposes an effort by dozens of House Democrats for an impeachment inquiry into the president, saying it would cause further divisions within the U.S.
In an interview on “Full Court Press with Greta Van Susteren,” the 2020 candidate for president took a firm stance against impeachment, putting her at odds with other Democratic candidates for president including Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).
“I don’t [support impeachment,]” Gabbard said. “You know, I think it’s important for us to think about what is in the best interest of the country and the American people, and continuing to pursue impeachment is something that I think will only further to tear our country apart.”
Gabbard has been one of the more sensible Democratic presidential candidates thus far so, naturally, she’s not getting much traction and didn’t qualify for the next debate.
Sen. Gabbard isn’t alone among prominent Democrats in thinking that impeachment isn’t a prudent idea. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — the most powerful Democrat in the land — has long been opposed to the idea and kept trying to resist it for quite a while.
Most polls show that impeachment isn’t popular with a majority of Americans either.
Many Democrats have been looking for some magical way to remove President Trump from office since the moment he was inaugurated. They put most of their hopeful eggs in the Russia collusion Mueller probe. As long as that was going on, impeachment remained mostly on the periphery.
Once the collusion thing turned out to be nothing, impeachment talk picked up rather quickly, but it still took some time to wear Pelosi down. She still isn’t in favor of it, but is indulging the kids’ fantasy.
Gabbard wants to get the president out of office the old fashioned way:
“Make no bones about it: We need to defeat Donald Trump. But I think it’s important for our country’s sake and our future that the voters in this country are the ones who do that, and I believe that we will,” Gabbard added.
That was the company line for most of the Democratic candidates at the beginning of the primary season. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) was the first prominent candidate to come out for impeachment, and the talk about winning at the ballot box may not have disappeared after that, but it certainly got quieter.
Gabbard may be one of the next to drop out of the race. She’s not staking out any crazy territory, and that’s what’s selling for the 2020 Democratic field.
