FBI Agent Arrested After Firing Gun at Grand Rapids Police

An FBI special agent was arrested in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after allegedly firing at police outside of a Planet Fitness gym around 1:30 a.m. on December 6.

The 35-year-old suspect, Rueben Hernandez, was reportedly in town from Las Vegas on business. He is now being held in a Kent County jail on three pending charges.

Apparently, Hernandez walked into the gym and showed off his gun. According to investigators, the suspect then shot at a police sergeant who was attempting to make contact with him.

Reports indicated that he fired three shots near Lake Eastbrook Boulevard.

At the time, about seven people were inside the gym — no one was hurt. When Grand Rapids police arrived on scene, police say Hernandez fired at a Grand Rapids sergeant and the officer did not return fire.

Hernandez eventually surrendered to officers.

Alcohol appears to have been a factor.

Planet Fitness released the following statement:

We can confirm the isolated incident that took place early this morning at the Planet Fitness location in Grand Rapids. We can also confirm that no shots were fired inside the club, and that no one was injured. The suspect is currently in custody and we are grateful for the local authorities’ swift action and response.

As this is an ongoing investigation, any further inquiries should be directed to the Grand Rapids Police Department.

FBI Special Agent Ray Johnson told WZZM 13:

According to Kent County court records, Hernandez is being charged with assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm at or near a building, and possession of a firearm while under the influence.
