During a Senate hearing on Wednesday, FBI Director James Comey said the FBI doesn’t “give a rip about politics” and that President Obama has not been briefed on the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s possibly illegal “homebrew” email server.

Comey was on Capitol Hill testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee when Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) asked about the possibility of the White House interfering with the FBI’s investigation.

“In a 60 Minutes interview, President Obama declared in a response to a question about Secretary Clinton’s use of a private server, ‘I can tell you that this is not a situation in which America’s security was endangered,'” Grassley said. “How can you assure the American people that you will not let the White House influence the FBI’s inquiry?”

Comey answered, “I hope the American people know the FBI well enough and the nature and character of this organization. As I’ve said many times, we don’t give a rip about politics.”

He added, in apparent reference to Obama, that “anybody’s view about an investigation they’re not involved in is irrelevant. We care about finding out what is true and doing that in a competent, honest and independent way. I promise you that’s the way we conduct ourselves.”

Comey also told the committee that the president does not receive briefings about the ongoing investigation, so he would have no way of knowing how it is proceeding.
