The boldness of the left when it comes to their advocacy of abortion shouldn’t surprise us anymore. With states like New York passing permissive abortion laws and other states considering allowing doctors to kill babies nearly to birth, there’s not much to shock us anymore.
Not so fast. Alabama State Representative John Rogers, a Democrat, spoke out against new abortion restrictions that the legislature is considering. What he said could chill you to the bone.

Rogers began with the same tired tropes that abortion is a woman’s right to choose and that he as a man wouldn’t dare presume to tell a woman what to do with her body. Then he used these words: “Some kids are unwanted. So you kill them now or you kill them later. You bring them into the world unwanted, unloved, then send them to the electric chair.”
According to Fox News, Rogers went further:
He continued by saying some children who face abortion could be “retarded” and “half-deformed.”
And Yellowhammer News, a blog on Alabama politics reports that Rogers went even further:
He followed that up with, “I may bring a bill to force all men to have vasectomies. That would end this whole debate. There would be no more abortions and eventually no more voters.”
Rogers’ remarks came after the Alabama state House passed the Human Life Protection Act — a bill that makes abortion a felony except when a mother’s life is in danger — by an overwhelming 74-3 vote after Democrat legislators stormed out of the chamber in protest of the bill, which will now go to the state Senate. Rogers spoke at a protest of his own.
It’s worth noting that the Human Life Protection Act would only go into effect if and when the Supreme Court overturns Roe v Wade, but that didn’t stop these Democrats from walking out rather than making a statement with their votes and going on record opposing the bill.
The Alabama Senate Republicans were quick to condemn Rogers, and rightfully so.

The brazen and somewhat uncouth statement from one legislator shows just how bold many Democrats have become simply in the name of protecting abortion. In Rogers’ calculus, some children aren’t wanted, so we might as well go ahead and kill them now. In his eyes, an unwanted baby can never make a name for himself or herself beyond the lowest of society.
This idea that the only factor that determines our lot in life is the situation into which we arrive in this world flies in the face of the American dream that allowed a man like Rogers to become a legislator in a region in which his ancestors lived as slaves. It runs counter to the values that have allowed so many dreamers, entrepreneurs, and risk-takers to succeed.
Representative Rogers, you say that some children are genuinely unwanted and completely unloved? Tell that to the parents who foster children who came into the world under the most horrific circumstances. Tell that to the children who, through the foster system and adoption, have come to thrive and succeed despite the odds. Tell that to the adherents of the faiths who believe that all human lives are “fearfully and wonderfully made” by God in His image.
This kind of fatalism to which John Rogers and his ilk have resorted should make us sad. It should lead us to weep at the idea that any child would go through life unwanted and unloved. It should spur us to action. And I believe that for many people this attitude will spur action that can lead to a change of hearts and minds on abortion, as well as foster care and adoption.
But what’s worse is that the attitude of Rogers and others can also make us cynical, because it comes about with one goal: to preserve abortion.
