Libya’s New Rebel Commander

Libya’s new rebel commander is Gen. Khalifa Hifter, a man who defected from Qaddafi’s regime in 1987 and has spent the intervening years in suburban Washington, DC.

He sounds like a very different man from Hakim Belhaj, the Islamist in charge of the rebels in Tripoli. Belhaj says he once commanded the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group whereas Hifter has worked with the CIA.
