After Tunisia’s dictator Ben Ali fled the country his loyal prime minister Mohammed Ghannoushi took over. He’s gone now, too. The speaker of parliament, Fouad Mebazaa, is today’s interim leader and he’s promising “a better political life which will include democracy, plurality and active participation for all the children of Tunis.”
I know little about this man and can hardly guess if this is for real or if he’s just saying what his fellow citizens want to hear, but it sounds good and Tunisia is the kind of country where it might turn out to be true. If any Arab country can really make it work, I’d put my money on this one.
