Claire Berlinski’s new essay in City Journal about the feelings of dread and exhilaration in the darkening city of Istanbul is outstanding. I got chills reading it and you will, too, if you’ve been there in the last couple of years. She could almost be writing about Beirut, the other exhilarating doomed metropolis of the Eastern Mediterranean.
