This is pure insanity:
A five-year-old boy was reportedly handcuffed and held in custody for five hours because he may have been ‘a threat to America’.
The child was one of more than 100 people held at airports across the United States after Donald Trump signed an order banning travel from seven majority Muslim countries.
This happened at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C. The poor kid was separated from his own mom because he was “identified as a possible threat.” That’s insane enough in itself (what’s he going to do, blow up his Captain America figurine?), but what makes this even worse is that he is an American citizen. Note: not a tourist with a visa and not even a green-card holder, but a citizen; someone who enjoys the same rights as every other American citizen, but who just so happens to be of Iranian descent.
When lunacy like this happens, the White House can choose between two options: explain that this is not how the executive order on immigrants was meant to be implemented or, in a moment of brain freeze, defend such actions. Guess what Press Secretary Sean Spicer decided to do:
Speaking after the incident, Donald Trump’s Press Secretary Sean Spicer said: ‘To assume that just because of someone’s age and gender that they don’t pose a threat would be misguided and wrong.’
If that’s not a reason for Trump to give this imbecile a final warning I don’t know what is. Defending the handcuffing of a 5-year-old American citizen is absolutely disgraceful.
Democrat Senator Chris Van Hollen has rightfully condemned this stupidity. He also said that the authorities were given advance notice of the boy’s arrival, meaning that they had absolutely no excuse to hold him, let alone to treat him like a common criminal by handcuffing him. The senator later tried to check whether the boy had been released but was denied entrance by airport authorities. Because you obviously can’t have senators trying to defend the rights of American children who just so happen to have Iranian parents. Can’t have that!
Shameful. Just like every other country in the world, America has the right to secure its borders and to determine who is and who is not allowed to legally enter. But this is an American citizen who is five years old.
It’s idiocy like this, and Spicer’s defense of it, that will discredit America’s image in the rest of the world. It’ll confirm the left’s talking point that this order isn’t about securing the border or fighting terrorism, but about racism and xenophobia.
