Election Integrity Is Bigger Than One Man’s Ego

Losing a primary can change a man. Sometimes it humbles him. Unfortunately, sometimes it changes him in the worst possible way. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) appears to have chosen the second path, and his recent behavior raises an uncomfortable question. Is Cornyn settling a personal score with Donald Trump, or has he quietly switched teams on one of the GOP's defining priorities? Either answer should worry you.

Ever since Cornyn lost his primary to Ken Paxton, he's been acting like a man who forgot which party he belongs to. He's now actively opposing the SAVE America Act. This legislation would be the foundation of election integrity in the United States, and Cornyn himself has claimed to support it. Since his primary, though, he’s been undermining the bill and publicly going after Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) for trying to pass it.

Election integrity has been a Republican priority for years. What gives?

The only logical explanation is that Trump endorsed Paxton, and since Trump wants the SAVE America Act passed, Cornyn is done supporting it.

Is losing an election an excuse to sabotage election security?

Cornyn served as GOP Senate whip for six years. He sold himself as the seasoned operator who could move major legislation through the chamber. He had a chance to prove he was fighting for Trump’s agenda, and he didn’t take it.

If you’re not fighting to get the SAVE America Act passed after spending years treating election security as a threat to the GOP’s own electoral survival, you’re really no different from the Democrats who are trying to undermine election security. As PJ Media previously reported, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said days before Cornyn's comments that the bill was stalled because some Republican senators "hate President Donald Trump too much" to support it. Cornyn just proved Thune's point for him.

Look, I can understand why Cornyn doesn’t want to campaign with Paxton. I really do, and I don’t blame him for it. Politics is personal, and losing a primary stings. But the SAVE America Act isn’t about Trump, Paxton, or Cornyn. It’s about securing elections and making it harder for Democrats to manipulate the system.

That’s a cause that should be bigger than anyone’s ego.

Cornyn’s defenders may call his opposition a matter of principle. It looks far more like a personal grudge. Either his years of pro-Trump positioning were never as sincere as advertised, or he’s allowing bitterness over a political defeat to override the priorities of the voters who kept sending him back to Washington. Neither explanation is flattering.

Cornyn is choosing to undermine one of the most important election-integrity measures in the country. With every passing day, Cornyn gives them another reason to believe they made the right choice.
