AOC No Longer Humiliates Herself, But the Entire Democratic Party

There's something almost poetic about watching Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) deliver a speech that managed to embarrass not just herself, but every Democrat who's apparently decided she's their best shot at the White House in 2028. The question isn't whether AOC made a fool of herself again. She did. The real question is what it says about the people who heard it and still cheered.

On Saturday, Democrats gathered in downtown Montgomery, Ala., for an “All Roads Lead to the South” rally to protest Alabama's newly redrawn congressional map. AOC took the microphone and framed Republican redistricting as some kind of historic injustice, apparently unconcerned that her own party has spent years carving up every other blue state in the nation with surgical precision. It goes without saying that Democrats don't object to gerrymandering. They object to being out-gerrymandered.

But her redistricting hypocrisy almost isn't even worth dwelling on at the moment, because AOC handed everyone a much more entertaining reason to cringe.

"It is time for the North to pull up to the South," she said, "and let them know exactly what they have uncorked with this injustice. They think they can draw us out of power. They do not know the sleeping giant that they just awakened." And finally, her coup de grâce: "What they thought was the final blow is actually just the opening silo."

The opening silo.

The opening… silo.

You can watch the video multiple times; this is not a case of her words being misheard. She said “opening silo.”

Of course, she meant "opening salvo,” obviously. Any reasonably educated person, and certainly anyone who aspires to the presidency, would know that. A salvo is a burst of fire, a decisive opening move. A silo is where you store grain. Now, unless the Democratic Party is starting a bakery, the only logical conclusion here is that AOC flubbed a common expression because she doesn’t know what a couple of common words mean. She literally fumbled one of the most common rhetorical expressions in the English language on a stage in front of a crowd that was there to be inspired by her.

AOC routinely makes headlines for the wrong reasons, fumbles basic policy questions, and gives Democrats precious little reason to have faith in her abilities. She's never exactly exuded intellectual firepower. And yet… she just topped a poll of potential 2028 Democratic presidential contenders from AtlasIntel, the most accurate pollster of 2024. Respondents were asked whom they'd choose in a Democratic primary. AOC came out on top with 26%. Pete Buttigieg came in second at 22%, followed by Gavin Newsom at 21%. Kamala Harris, meanwhile, has cratered to just 13%.

So let's absorb that for a moment. The woman who just told a rally crowd about "the opening silo" is leading the field of Democratic presidential contenders. Something tells me she also says things like “for all intensive purposes,” “taken for granite,” “supposably,” and “pacifically.”

The party that spent years mocking Republican voters for their choices has crowned as its frontrunner a congresswoman who mangles common idioms on camera and has built her brand almost entirely on socialist slogans and viral social media moments.

But Democrats who fancy AOC as presidential material don’t care that she’s a moron. The "opening silo" gaffe isn't disqualifying to her supporters. It never would be. Intelligence, competence, basic command of language… these aren't the metrics her supporters are using to pick their champion. They want the socialism. That’s why, as much as this was an embarrassment for her, it’s not hers alone anymore. She's comfortable in her incompetence. The embarrassment belongs to every Democrat who has watched her since she entered the national stage and thought, yes, that's our candidate.
